Marvel’s Wolverine is currently under development at Insomniac Games and is expected to release somewhere around late 2024 or early 2025. The game was first announced in 2021 during PlayStation Showcase and not much has been known about it, except that it is set in the same universe as Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man games.

Players have been waiting to hear more about it but that hasn’t stopped them from speculating what the game could entail and what characters it may bring. Wolverine has several villains and allies that we have seen with and against him in comics and movies and there are many that we could see in Marvel’s Wolverine.

Wolverine is a character that has a great history and there is so much that developers can take inspiration from. Regardless of who Insomniac decides to bring into the game, below are four characters that we would like to see in Marvel’s Wolverine and three characters that we don’t need in the game.

4. Professor Xavier

Professor Xavier is the mentor of Wolverine and needs to be in Marvel's Wolverine.

Professor Xavier or Professor X is one of the strongest heroes in the Marvel universe and first made an appearance in Marvel Comics in X-Men #1 in 1963. He is known for his mind-controlling abilities which he can use to control things and even people around him. Professor Xavier has been synonymous with X-Men and has been a mentor to several mutants over the years including Wolverine at his school for mutants.

Although he might now appear as a main character, even his brief presence would connect Wolverine to X-Men. Wolverine has also helped Professor Xavier at the school supervising and teaching other mutants at the school. Professor X needs to be in Marvel’s Wolverine as he is someone Wolverine listens to and he might also contribute to the story that might add twists.

3. The Incredible Hulk

Wolverine and Hulk have been in fights before and a battle between them would be epic.

Marvel fans all around the world love Bruce Banner and more than that they love him turning into Hulk, filled with rage and ready to destroy anything that comes his way and it would be a sight to behold in Marvel’s Wolverine. It is also very likely that Hulk can appear in the game as a rival to Wolverine and we might see some great battles.

Both Wolverine and Hulk are almost impossible to stand against when they are in anger and it makes a perfect scenario for a damn good battle. It also wouldn’t be the first as both the superheroes have already locked horns once but Hulk dominated as he beat Logan. Hulk is also seemingly teased during the game’s reveal as a license plate with “HLK 181” featured in the reveal teaser.

For those unaware, HLK is a nod to the Hulk and 181 is the reference to #181 for the Incredible Hulk comic book. While it may just be a random detail to many, hardcore Marvel fans feel that it is intentional. Nevertheless, if Hulk were to be in Marvel’s Wolverine game, it would be amazing to see both battle it out.

2. Spider-Men

It has already been revealed by Insomniac that Marvel’s Wolverine is set in the same universe as Marvel’s Spider-Man games and there is a chance that both Spider-Man, Peter Parker, and Miles Morales could be seen swinging around in the game. In several Marvel comics, Spider-Man and Wolverine have appeared together and it would be amazing to see them both together again.

Spider-Man and Wolverine have had a complex relationship but both have respect for each other and Spider-Man is one of the few heroes that Wolverine trusts. It’d be great to see both heroes cross paths and go on a mission together, regardless of what the story might bring for the players.

1. Sabretooth

Sabertooth is the arch-nemesis of Wolverine.

Sabretooth needs to be in Marvel’s Wolverine as you can’t have a Wolverine game without the arch nemesis to the titular hero. Reason? Because he is one of the most popular enemies of Wolverine. Both Sabretooth and Wolverine have similar powers and abilities and Sabretooth could also be the main antagonist in the game.

Sabretooth has been seen in several Wolverine comics and adaptations and it only makes that he appears in the game. Insomniac has done great work with bringing several Marvel characters into their games and a “friend turned foe” narrative for Sabretooth and Wolverine would do wonders for the game’s storyline and provide a very immersive experience for players.

3. Deadpool

Deadpool's fun and light personality may not fit in the tense Wolverine story.
Deadpool’s fun and light personality may not fit in the tense Wolverine story.

Deadpool is one of the most popular and comedic characters in the Marvel universe and while some may want him in the game, Deadpool doesn’t need to appear given that the game will have a serious tone. Deadpool and Logan have been seen together in the past but both have different personalities which would not complement the game.

Deadpool has a playful and comedic personality while Wolverine is a straight-faced serious guy, bringing Deadpool as a fun addition might make sense but it would not help tell the mature story. Another reason behind Deadpool not being a great addition to Marvel’s Wolverine is that he breaks the fourth wall, which is good but it might hinder the story and gameplay feeling immersive.

2. Cyclops

Cyclops and Wolverine's complicated relationship will do no good to the story.

Cyclops also need not appear in Marvel’s Wolverine and there are a couple of reasons. Firstly, both the heroes have different personalities and have a very complicated relationship with each other. Both Cyclops and Wolverine have been behind the same girl, Jean Grey who is also considered as one of the most powerful X-Men.

This take if added to the story may take the essence of a serious narrative. Wolverine also overshadows Cyclops at times and there is no point in a character coming to the game if they can’t reach their full potential.

1. X-Men

Mutants who serve no purpose to the story need not be in the game.
Mutants who serve no purpose to the story need not be in the game.

Wolverine has been the face and leader of X-Men for a long long time but that doesn’t mean that X-Men should come to the game. It is still unknown where Marvel’s Wolverine is set in Logan’s life and even though Professor Xavier coming to the game makes sense, the X-Men would just be side characters and would also be pointless in the game as Logan is kind of a loner.

Marvel’s Wolverine is most probably going to be dark and violent and since Wolverine likes to operate alone, it’d be best to not bring other unnecessary mutants to the game. The random encounters may be fine but proper appearance is just not needed.
