As fans celebrate Insomniac’s massive victory with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the studio’s next title for the PlayStation 5 is currently being developed. Marvel’s Wolverine is Insomniac’s next project, but it might take a while until we see any official news related to it.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, Marvel’s Wolverine will likely arrive in 2025. Considering Wolverine’s dark (often troubled) and lonesome personality, it’s evident that the game will be much darker and grittier than Marvel’s Spider-Man titles.
What Do We Know About Marvel’s Wolverine?
Announced in 2021, the reveal trailer showcased a lot of things straight out of Marvel’s more twisted world. A bunch of dead bodies, soul music, and, of course, Logan himself. However, we haven’t gotten much information about the game’s setting or gameplay since then. Recently, Daniel Richtman hinted at a possible launch window for Marvel’s Wolverine.
The 2025 launch date makes sense, considering how the game will by then hit the 4-year mark in development. This is a typical triple-A title timeframe for many studios, and the studio has shown tremendous talent in bringing out excellent titles within this kind of development cycle.
The game will exclusively arrive for the PS5 in 2025, and players will be able to play as Wolverine, exploring the fictional island of Madripoor. Other than these minor details, we can only speculate and guess what the game is really about.
In September of this year, Tommy Mann, the Senior Cinematic Animator and Culture Council Co-Founder at Insomniac, tweeted about his work on the new game. Tommy was previously working on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and it seems that all of his attention has now shifted to the next game.
Moreover, Ryan Schneider, Head of Franchise Strategy and Studio Relations at the studio, spoke about the team’s vision for the game in a PlayStation Blog article:
So many of the Insomniac team are such huge fans of the character, and one of the key elements that drew us to him is surprisingly not that different from Spider-Man: Both heroes feel deeply compelled to defend people who are less able to do so.
However, this was back in 2021, and we hope to hear from Insomniac officially again soon. In the meantime, based on how well Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has been doing, we can only contemplate the intensity and depth the studio’s next title will have to offer.
Exploring a New and Complex Character in Insomniac’s Next Title
So far, Insomniac has carefully explored the many nuances of different Marvel heroes through its games. On one hand, we’ve played as Miles and Peter, who are more than eager to save the city, and explored characters like Venom and Lizard, who are still figuring out their place in the world.
However, with the next title, the studio will be taking on a character who has led a harsh and painful life that almost makes him an anti-hero to many. In fact, Wolverine is a man who has struggled with life’s harshest decisions and paired up with some of the most powerful people before.
Originally called James Howlett (who later adopts the identity of Logan), Wolverine hails from a wealthy Canadian family towards the end of the 19th century. He had to abandon this life after a tragic and powerful force started shaping him. In hopes of having accelerated healing abilities, Logan falls at the bitter end of things where his hands can grow claws.
Eventually, his powers are amplified, and Logan decides to lead a life of being a hero to those in need while using his deadly rage and killer instincts for good causes.
The studio can do a lot with the character here, and based on certain leaks, players will be exploring Logan’s journey on the island of Madripoor. This fictional island holds powerful secrets and enemies and certainly makes for a terrific setting for Insomniac’s next adventure.
