David Leitch is reportedly on board to direct a new movie – and potentially a new trilogy of films – in the Jurassic World franchise. The co-director of 2014’s John Wick, and director of 2017’s Atomic Blonde, 2018’s Deadpool 2, 2019’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, 2022’s Bullet Train, and the upcoming The Fall Guy later this year, will oversee a project in a franchise many people believe should be left alone.
The news of his recruitment has divided film fans. Not only do they believe there have been enough Jurassic World movies, but they’re also not sure about David Leitch’s suitability to direct a film in the franchise.
However, those fears should be allayed, as Leitch’s directing style lends itself purposely to the dinosaur-filled action of the Jurassic World franchise. Here are five excellent attributes he’ll bring to Jurassic World 4.
Immersive Filming
David Leitch’s directorial style is exceptionally immersive. Think of Bullet Train when the core characters were fighting inside the eponymous vehicle – it felt enclosed for those watching and almost like being there with them. If Leitch can bring that to the fantastical universe of Jurassic World, it’ll be terrific. It’ll work particularly well if there’s a park with enclosures, but film fans should also trust that he can bring this characteristic to the open world in which dinosaurs now roam free.
Ridiculously Awesome Over-the-Top Action
The Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies have all been action-packed, so Jurassic World 4 will need something unique and spectacular to make a splash. David Leitch directed Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, so he has experience overseeing the crazy, iconic, physics-defying action of the Fast & Furious franchise. Leitch’s Jurassic World 4 could feature some action scenes that top everything seen before in the franchise, like Jurassic Park’s T-Rex chase or Jurassic World’s Indominus Rex rampages.
Fast-Paced and Hyper-Kinetic
The main thing fans want of a Jurassic World movie – or any movie for that matter – is that it’s not dull. David Leitch’s focus on fast-paced, frenetic, hyper-kinetic action will ensure that the core aim of the film is to entertain through action scenes of that description. If he utilizes the style he and Chad Stahelski implemented in John Wick, people watching Jurassic World 4 will barely have time to breathe between the exciting action set pieces. The idea of a movie with action choreographed like a John Wick film but with added dinosaurs is pretty intriguing.
Humor In Dark Situations
Deadpool 2 proved David Leitch can direct a movie that finds humor in dark situations. When Wade Wilson’s cancer symptoms returned when he was forced to wear a power-inhibiting collar, Leitch’s film still made light of it. It doesn’t get much darker than cancer, so it’s guaranteed he’ll find humor in Jurassic World 4, even in terrifying dinosaur-filled situations. The Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies all have funny moments – even amidst the inevitable horror – and Leitch will ensure this one does so better than ever before.
Demanding Vibrant and Exuberant Acting Performances
David Leitch demands vibrant and exuberant acting performances from his cast members, evident from how the ensembles perform in Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, and Bullet Train. Every Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movie has characters with prominent personalities. Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm, Vince Vaughn’s Nick Van Owen, and Chris Pratt’s Owen Brady are just some examples. Leitch’s direction will ensure more eccentric, attention-grabbing performances in Jurassic World 4, both from existing characters and those the film introduces to fans.
