Disney has been featuring different princesses since 1937, and each of them is distinguished by their unique characteristics. Despite their differences, they all share the same singular princess quality, a kindness of heart, and that is why we all call them Disney Princesses.

But, not all of them are technically princesses. Certainly, some were of royal birth, and some became princesses by affiliation. There are actually a lot of them that are not princesses, although we think they do deserve the title. Here are some of the famous Disney princesses that aren’t actually princesses:

Mulan (Mulan)

Mulan secretly volunteered herself to join the Imperial Regiment in place of her ill father. She disguised herself as a man and trained under Commander Tung. Together they defeated the Huns. Soon, they found out Mulan’s secret and they reprimanded her. However, because of her courage, they honored and praised her.

Technically, Mulan is not of noble birth but a warrior and a high-ranking member of the army. But because she possesses the characteristics of a Disney princess, she is often included in the list.

Vanellope von Schweetz (Wreck-It Ralph)

Vanellope became an unofficial Disney princess in the sequel movie Ralph Breaks The Internet. There, she met the rest of the Disney royalties. They asked her what kind of princess she is. Indeed, she is the princess of her own game, Sugar Rush.

But, she prefers gaming and going on adventures than doing all the typical princess activities like singing or talking to animals. Hence, Vanellope is not officially a Disney princess.

Jane Porter (Tarzan)

Jane is an ethnologist who travels to Africa, alongside her father, to study gorillas. There, she met a man named Tarzan who lives with the wild animals and eventually falls in love with him. Tarzan became King of the Apes, but that won’t necessarily mean that Jane also becomes a royalty.

However, Jane is smart, kind, and brave. She is often compared with Beauty and the Beast’s Belle. Indeed, Jane deserves to be called a princess. She is very knowledgeable about animals.

Esmeralda (The Hunchback Of Notre Dame)

Esmeralda is a gypsy girl who wanders the streets of Paris, dancing her way to charm the people around her. She is beautiful, witty, and outspoken, and she was originally a princess until she eventually disappeared from the list.

Her history actually resembles a lot of other princesses. She is orphaned, people in power abused her, yet she remains pure and true to herself. Indeed, Esmeralda deserves to take back the title of a princess.

Megara, or Meg as she is fondly called, is a cynical woman enslaved by Hades, the god of the underworld. She sold her soul to him to save the life of her boyfriend. Eventually, she and Hercules met and fell in love with each other.

She is not royalty, although she embodies the characteristics of a Disney princess. Her beauty, charm, and loyalty make her worthy of the title. She is also a well-known character that does not go out of style.
