The first night of the delayed 2023 Emmy Awards kicked off this Saturday, January 6, 2024, and major shows and films managed to nab some deserving awards. The night was mostly for technical and creative awards while the major acting awards are to be handed out on January 15.
HBO’s The Last of Us dominated the first day with a total of eight wins and popular shows like The Bear, The White Lotus, Beef, and Ted Lasso won in some categories. But some well-known shows did not win any awards and returned empty-handed on Day 1.
These Popular Shows Didn’t Win Any Awards on Day 1 of the 75th Primetime Emmys
Day 1 The 75th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards recognized major technical and creative achievements in various incredible shows and films that came out during the period from June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023. The Last Of Us Took home a whopping 8 awards, winning for visual effects, makeup, title design, sound editing and mixing, picture editing, and guest stars Nick Offerman and Storm Reid.
The winners revealed by Variety also highlight The White Lotus and The Bear, each winning in four categories. Additionally, Netflix’s Beef won in three categories while Ted Lasso won in two. However, other acclaimed shows returned empty-handed with no wins on day 1. These 5 shows unfortunately were left with zero wins on the day.
1. Star Trek: Picard
The third season of Patrick Stewart starrer sci-fi series proved to be an emotionally satisfying ending to Stewart’s long-standing character and the series as a whole. The much-acclaimed series was nominated in the prosthetic makeup and contemporary makeup (non-prosthetic) categories at the 75th Emmy Awards.
Unfortunately, the award for both categories went to The Last of Us and Wednesday respectively and the final season of the series has now lost its chance of earning even a single Emmy award.
2. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
The much-anticipated return of The Lord of the Rings franchise was met with a rather dismal reception from fans of the franchise. The series only received nominations in the technical categories including costumes, title design, prosthetic makeup, title theme music, sound editing, and visual effects.
Sadly, it did not win in any of these categories and has exhausted its chance of winning an Emmy. The makers can bring forward a superior second season that will draw the attention of the voters and try to win next time.
3. Succession
While the final season of the much beloved HBO series is sure to nab some major acting awards, the same cannot be said of its technical categories. For Day 1 of the Emmy Awards which awarded mostly technical achievements in TV, the show was nominated in categories including casting, guest actor, music composition, picture editing, production design, and sound mixing.
The show didn’t win in any of these categories. Since the show is more popular for its acting and narrative rather than its technical elements, the loss in these categories is understandable. However, the series is expected to reign supreme in the major acting awards and also a strong contender for the Best Drama category on January 15.
4. Andor
This unique Star Wars series brought forward a gritty tone to the lore of the universe that made it stand out from all the other shows and movies that came before. It was nominated for its cinematography, music composition, title theme music, sound editing, and visual effects.
However, it didn’t win in any of these categories. The show has also been nominated for major awards in writing and directing while also being a deserving spot in the Best Drama category. Fans of the franchise can only hope that the show manages to nab an award in either of these 3 categories.
5. Better Call Saul
The Emmys have notoriously overlooked Bob Odenkirk’s Better Call Saul over the years as the series has not received a single Emmy in its entire run from 2015 to 2022. The sixth and final season, like any of the previous ones, has also been nominated for major acting awards for Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn, and for its writing. It has also been nominated for Best Drama Series.
History may sadly repeat itself as the series failed to win in the categories of picture editing and sound mixing already. One can only hope that this unfair ‘curse’ on the show breaks with its final season and the institution finally recognizes the brilliance of the show.
