James Gunn’s DC Universe – a soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe – begins in 2025 with Superman: Legacy. The movie will feature a young version of Superman, played by David Corenswet, and several other DC characters, including Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Guy Gardner, and Maxwell Lord.
Another prominent superhero set to appear is Kara Zor-El, AKA Supergirl, who’s getting an eponymous film in the franchise – Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – which is set to commence filming later this year.
It’s recently been confirmed that talented young star Milly Alcock will be taking on the role of Superman’s powerful cousin and will debut in the above-mentioned Superman: Legacy, making the DC Universe’s opening installment all the more exciting.
If you need more reason to be excited about Alcock’s DCU casting as Supergirl, you should check out these five previous on-screen roles.
The School (2018)
Australian horror movie The School is a prime example of why film critics should often be ignored. It’s been largely slammed in reviews, but the negativity is harsh. The plot concerns a doctor, Amy Wintercraig, played by Megan Drury, who awakens perplexed in a bathtub in an abandoned school, where she must fight against evil supernatural forces and her inner demons to discover the truth about the whereabouts of her missing son. Milly Alcock plays Jien, one of the school’s creepy children who haunts Amy at every turn in her only movie role to date. She’s excellent in her stunning makeup. The School is a spooky movie with plenty of heart and good ideas. Its primarily little-known cast does well and makes a refreshing change from stereotypical Outback-based Australian horror.

Upright
The Australian comedy-drama series Upright is the show Milly Alcock is best known for in her home country. From 2019 until 2002, she played the leading role of Megan “Meg” Adams alongside Tim Minchin as Laclan “Lucky” Flynn. Meg is a runaway teenager, and Lucky is a struggling musician. They (literally) crash into each other lives and spend the first season attempting to transport an upright piano across the southern Australian Outback to Lucky’s terminally ill mother in Perth, his hometown. In the second season, they try to find Meg’s missing mother in the vast rainforests of northern Queensland. Hilarity ensues in this quintessentially Aussie romp, and both main stars are fantastic. Alcock kills it as Meg, delivering an attention-grabbing and energetic performance throughout. She received an AACTA Award nomination for her role in the series.

The Gloaming
The Gloaming is an Australian supernatural thriller series following the efforts of an unconventional policewoman to uncover the mysteries of the murder of an unidentified female victim. She’s forced to ally herself with a man she hasn’t spoken to in decades and finds evidence linking the murder to an unsolved case from the past. With themes of the occult and police corruption, The Gloaming is thoroughly entertaining. Its leads, Emma Booth and Ewen Leslie, are excellent. Milly Alcock is impressive in a recurring role as Jenny McGinty – a girl involved in the aforementioned unsolved past case – in the show’s only season in 2020. This little gem should engross people who enjoy supernatural mystery shows like Twin Peaks.

Reckoning
Reckoning is an Australian crime thriller series about a high school girl going missing and the prime suspect being a serial killer, the Russian River Killer, who’s been inactive for five years. The show follows two fathers – one the serial killer – as they clash destructively and disrupt their otherwise quiet suburban community. True Blood’s Sam Trammell plays murderer Leo Doyle, and Aden Young plays Detective Sergeant Mike Serrato, who tries to bring him down. They’re both outstanding, and Milly Alcock shines as Serrato’s daughter, Sam, in a recurring role in the 2018 series. Reckoning is pretty derivative and often feels contrived, but it’s well-performed and keeps audiences guessing enough to hold their attention.

House of the Dragon
Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy franchise A Song of Ice and Fire – specifically his 2018 book Fire & Blood. It depicts the events leading up to House Targaryen’s decline. It opens around a century after the Seven Kingdoms were united by the Targaryen Conquest, two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen was born. House of the Dragon is an intriguing, brilliantly-paced series that’s as violent, sexy, and entertaining as Game of Thrones. Milly Alcock plays the young version of Rhaenyra Targaryen in five episodes of the show’s first season and gives a compelling performance that has made her a worldwide star. She looks at home among a talented and established cast, including talent like Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, and Rhys Ifans. A second season is coming later in 2024.
