6: Dead Space

sci-fi video games

Back in 2008, the Dead Space video game franchise began and is more based on the horror side of sci-fi, not a game to be played in the dark. You traverse through areas as Isaak Clarke, a systems engineer for the USG Ishimurafights through hordes of Necromorphs and solves puzzles to progress through the game while trying your best not to defecate in your pants as incredibly scary-looking aliens jump out at you with suspenseful overtures to make it even creepier.

5: Fort Solis

Fort Solis is a third-person thriller set on Mars in what appears to be an abandoned space station where you are alerted to a routine alarm. Engineer Jack Leary has to investigate where events unravel and accelerate at a rapid rate. Visually, Fort Solis is great; as you play through interacting with the main characters, read through emails, and listen to tapes you come across, you get a clearer picture of what has happened on the station.

Destiny 2, number four on our sci-fi video games list is an online first-person shooter, developed and published by Bungie and set in deep space. Not only can you play the game as a player vs. environment, but there is also a player vs. player element to the game. You acquire the role of guardian to protect humanity, where you wield the power called light to protect humanity from the darkness of various alien races. You travel through space and gain experience by killing enemies, completing missions, and running through dungeons. In addition to the vast amount of content, Destiny 2 has a mass collection of different weapons to choose from, which are also upgradeable to help you progress through the universe and complete harder dungeons to get more advanced gear and weapons.

3: Mass Effect

sci-fi video games

Mass Effect is a military sci-fi third-person shooter where you play as the character Commander Shepard as he attempts to save the Milky Way from a mechanical hibernating race of aliens called the Reapers. Sheppard is investigating a believed agent of the Reapers called Saren Arterius. Furthermore, as you are battling through the universe, you get to select the way your story heads, as well as the dialogue that influences the rest of the gameplay as it is all interlinked.

2: Starfield

sci-fi video games

Starfield is one of the most anticipated games of 2023. It is an action-packed role-playing game where you can play either first-person or third-person as you battle through space, not only fighting aliens and space pirates but also finding artifacts for a faction called Constellation, a mysterious organization of space explorers in New Atlantis. On these artifact-finding missions, you will also find other factions to help and gain a reputation along the way. Battling your way through space, not only will you face non-player characters on the planets that you visit, but you will also have spaceship battles above these planets. To travel to the planets, you will have to win these battles.

1: Halo

sci-fi video games

Last but not least by far my personal favorite which tops the best sci-fi video games is Halo, you start off coming out of cryostasis. You are known as Master Chief medically engineered “super soldier” who is a Spartan as you progress through the franchise you will notice not all Spartans are the same. Master Chief’s main goal is to stave off human extinction which seems to be the main goal of the Covenant, which are the first alien race Master Chief comes across in the franchise you will later go on to find that there are other alien races in the Halo universe, you head to different planets with different missions mainly saving your allies in different checkpoints throughout the game, as you progress the story unfolds that the ring you are on is effectively a weapon that you must access the power of the ring to turn the tide of war.

Do you agree with this list? What would you have included in a list of sci-fi video games? Let us know what you think in the comments!

I'm a father first, gamer second, but I do love gaming. I own multiple consoles and if I have a second, one of them is switched on. Between Marvel, Spurs and gaming I'm a stereotypical nerd.
