Are you sick of drinking the same protein shake after every workout? Dwayne Johnson, aka ‘The Rock’ certainly is. That’s why he used ‘tequila’ to help his muscles recover from his exhausting workouts. Tequila, yes, you read that right.
But before you run out to the store to stock up on tequila, it’s important to note that the 51-year-old actor and former professional wrestler only consumed it to prepare for his part in a 2022 DC film. He even emphasized that tequila is only a minor component of his overall fitness regimen, which also consists of a balanced diet and consistent exercise.
Men’s Journal spoke with the charismatic figure last year about his fitness routine, health tips, and why viewers should be ready to see him in and as Black Adam.
Johnson admitted in the interview that he likes to unwind and recover from his workouts with a shot of “Teremana” tequila. He described how he used tequila to get ready to enter, or rather stampede, into the DC Universe as ‘Black Adam’.

Dwayne Johnson Used Tequila For Muscle Recovery
The mega-Hollywood action star and former professional wrestler, Dwayne Johnson is renowned for his chiseled physique and rigorous exercise routine. However, even for him, preparing for the lead part in the 2022 DC film, Black Adam has not been simple. Fans were in awe of The Rock’s sheer willpower and dedication after seeing glimpses of his strenuous workouts posted on social media.
Well, the Black Adam workout aimed to help him embody the antihero superhuman character’s strength and agility, in addition to making him look the part.
Thus, Johnson’s workouts have been designed to increase his mobility and flexibility while also enhancing his speed and power. He has spent a lot of time working out at the gym, engaging in everything from weightlifting to resistance training.
The 51-year-old actor has also been including stretching into his daily routine, in order to stay flexible and avoid injuries. It’s obvious that The Rock was straining his body to the breaking point to become this powerful character.
But training for the Black Rock wasn’t just ‘arduous’ on his body; it also exhausted him mentally. And, as he stated to Men’s Journal, he has his own preferred method of recovery after exercise:
“I can tell you that my favorite recovery tools are good lovin’ and tequila—preferably my own Teremana.”
His Biggest Adversities To Overcome With Training And Mental Wellness?
Dwayne Johnson has never shied away from a challenge, particularly when it comes to his physical fitness. He has stepped up the intensity of his workouts for his famous role as ‘Black Adam’s titular character.
Baywatch actor’s primary goal was to gain mass. He has been working out hard at the gym, performing heavy deadlifts, military presses, and squats. In addition, he performed many bodyweight exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, and dips.
Moreover, Johnson also focused on improving his agility and flexibility along with muscle mass. Pilates and other strength-based exercises have been incorporated into his workouts by his trainer, Dave Rienzi, to help him with his balance and mobility.
This was essential for a character like Black Adam, who is renowned for his superhuman strength and lightning-quick reflexes.
Finding balance is another aspect of his preparation for Black Adam. The actor believes that energy is needed for everything. To quote him:
“Everything requires energy. Our work, personal life, personal growth, relationships, education, mindfulness, mental wellness, mental health, physical fitness, and everything else. It can be draining, but I’m also trying to save a little bit for another gear that other people don’t have. That sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth gear. I always have that next gear waiting when it’s needed.”
Fast X actor obviously put his all into the role of Black Adam. Beyond the movie, there is a significant lesson to be learned from The Rock’s rigorous exercise schedule.
Whatever your objectives—be it to gain muscle, lose weight, or simply adopt a healthier lifestyle, it’s important to maintain discipline and dedication to the process.
