Actor Sergio Calderon who was popular for his roles in franchises such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Men In Black passed away this morning at the age of 77. With some memorable roles such as Captain Eduardo Villanueva and Jose, Calderon has worked in the industry for over six decades. The late actor primarily appeared in small roles.

Sergio Calderon was a professional actor since 1970 with The Bride in the Jungle being his first credit. The Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End actor studied at the Instituto Andrés Soler of the Asociación Nacional de Actores in Mexico before making his way to the John Huston movie.

How did Sergio Calderon pass away?

The American actor of Mexican descent worked with some of the most notable stars such as John Huston, Johnny Depp, Will Smith, and many others. As stated by his family, Sergio Calderon passed away due to natural causes. According to reps, he was in the hospital with a bout of pneumonia but it is uncertain if that was the main reason.

“He was in the hospital previously with a bout of pneumonia; not sure that was the cause.”

The late actor’s family consists of his wife Karen Dakin, son Patrick Calderon-Dakin, daughter Johanna Calderon-Dakin, son-in-law Raaj, along with three grandchildren.

Sergio Calderon played the role of Captain Eduardo Villanueva of the Adriatic Sea in the Johnny Depp blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. A very close ally to Mistress Ching, Villanueva didn’t consider Captain Jack Sparrow a true pirate.

The late actor portrayed quite a memorable performance as the short-statured pirate and is well known among the audiences. This will also be unfortunate news for the ardent Pirates of the Caribbean fans who were already doubtful about the future of the franchise without Johnny Depp. But on the other hand, with more PotC movies reportedly in development, Captain Eduardo Villanueva will be certainly missed.

Besides his role as Captain Villanueva, Sergio Calderon is also well-known as Jose in the first Men In Black movie starring Will Smith and Tomy Lee Jones in the lead. He is still remembered as “the head on the stick” guy.

Despite having a career mainly centering around small roles, the late actor shared screens with several A-listers. He worked with John Huston in two movies namely, The Bridge in the Jungle and Under the Volcano. While Calderon co-starred with Huston in the former film, the latter featured the Chinatown actor as the director of the movie.

Lastly, he was also seen in the FX series Better Things and as a special appearance in the Peacock show The Resort.
