After working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe together, Chris Hemsworth and the Russo brothers collaborated for the 2020 action thriller Extraction. Based on the graphic novel Ciudad, the film follows an Australian black ops mercenary, Tyler Rake, to rescue the kidnapped son of a crime lord. Starring David Harbour, Sam Hargrave, alongside the Thor star, the film received a pretty good response from critics and the audience.

And its producers, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo have shared that they are interested in expanding the 2020 film into a cinematic universe by exploring the prominent characters in the film.

Chris Hemsworth Film to Develop into a Cinematic Universe

Followed by the release of the 2020 film Extraction, its producers, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, announced that they have started working on the film’s sequel. The sequel is all done and is set to release later this month, bringing back Chris Hemsworth as the black ops mercenary Tyler Rake.

And it seems like the directing duo is also planning to expand the film series into a cinematic universe, as they have shared that they plan to explore the prominent characters from the film series. During a 2020 conversation with Collider, Joe Russo shared the thought, saying,

“I will say this, we are working at building out a universe of films that could potentially explore some of the other characters from the first movie and some new characters, and see more historical interaction between the characters.”

He further stated that if fans are interested in David Harbour’s character in the 2020 action thriller, they might see him as Gaspar in future Extraction movies. While the filmmakers have not officially announced another Extraction project, except its sequel, they might follow up with their plans after the release of Extraction 2.

Chris Hemsworth Hints at Extraction Spin-Offs

Although the Russo brothers have shared that they plan to develop the series into a universe, they have not announced any certain project, except the sequel Extraction 2 yet. However, Chris Hemsworth seemingly hinted that multiple sequels or spin-offs are already under development.

During his acceptance speech after winning the award for Action Movie Star of 2020 at E! People’s Choice Awards, the Marvel star thanked his fans and everyone who supported the film and voted for him to win. He also mentioned that it was one of the most incredible experiences in his life.

It was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had on set, and we’re gonna try make another couple more for you,” he further stated. It has led many to assume that the makers have already planned out the future projects under the series, which could also include spin-offs for several characters introduced in the 2020 movie and its sequel.

Extraction 2 is set to release on June 16, 2023, on Netflix.
