Christopher Nolan’s grand project, Oppenheimer, has earned yet another admirer in the form of the Academy Award-winning director, Oliver Stone. Often associated with controversial films centered around American politics, Stone has notably explored the lives of US Presidents in his films including JFK, Nixon, and W., and produced a trilogy on the US involvement in the Vietnam War.

In his praise for Oppenheimer, Oliver Stone labels it a ‘classic’ movie, commending Nolan for his layered screenplay writing. Surprisingly, Stone also discloses that he once contemplated creating a film based on the life of the Father of the Atom Bomb. But the Platoon director could not go through with the attempt to weave an intriguing tale around the theoretical physicist’s story.
Saturday, I sat through 3 hours of #Oppenheimer, gripped by Chris Nolan’s narrative. His screenplay is layered & fascinating. Familiar with the book by Kai Bird & Martin J. Sherwin, I once turned the project down because I couldn’t find my way to its essence. Nolan has found it. pic.twitter.com/4WSljbYxPb

The Natural Born Killers director’s appreciation extends to the film’s cast, with special mention of lead actor Cillian Murphy. Talking about Murphy’s exaggerated eyes, Stone tweeted:
His direction is mind-boggling & eye-popping as he takes reams of incident and cycles it into an exciting torrent of action inside all the talk. Each actor is a surprise to me, especially Cillian Murphy, whose exaggerated eyes here feel normal playing a genius like #Oppenheimer. pic.twitter.com/GwXqUq1V7j

Discussing the historical events of 1945, Stone also noted that he doubted whether such a movie could be made in the current climate of the United States:
#Oppenheimer is a classic, which I never believed could be made in this climate. Bravo. Two historical points I’d argue. Historian Peter Kuznick and I, in our #UntoldHistoryoftheUnitedStates series (2012), made the important distinction that — pic.twitter.com/3AkValOlRi

Earlier, screenwriter Paul Schrader hailed the movie as the most important film of this century, saying it would “blow the door off the hinges”. Kai Bird, the author of the book American Prometheus, on which the movie is based, praised the film as a stunning artistic achievement, affirming that it would initiate a global conversation on the topics Robert Oppenheimer sought to talk about.
