While Vin Diesel has played many, many roles in his career, his Marvel Cinematic Universe run as Groot is arguably one of the best works in his portfolio. After the end of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, fans were left wondering whether Vin Diesel would be reprising his role as Groot in the future or would he be following in the footsteps of his fellow MCU co-stars.

The end of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 introduced a revamped team of the Guardians as a majority of the OG’s go on their separate ways. The new team includes Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam Warlock, Phyla, and our two favorites, Rocket Racoon, and Groot, who is now known as Alpha Groot.

I am Groot season 2 will feature the return of Vin Diesel which just goes on to say that unlike Zoe Saldana, Scarlett Johansson, and Dave Bautista, Diesel is not willing to retire from his Marvel role just yet.

The upcoming series will feature yet another fun adventure of Baby Groot as he travels through the galaxy. The synopsis for season 2 reads,

“The troublemaking twig returns to mischief in the second season of I Am Groot. This time, Baby Groot finds himself exploring the universe and beyond aboard the Guardians’ spaceships, coming face to face -or nose to nose – with new colourful creatures and environments.”

It does not seem like Diesel is ready to move on from Groot just yet. We will be waiting to see how or if Alpha Groot gets a cameo in other MCU films. Right now, the excitement has rightly been hogged by our favorite iteration of the character – Baby Groot.

How Vin Diesel Got to Play Groot

While usually studios offer specific roles to the actors and they only have the choice to say yes or no, things were a bit different with Diesel. In an interview, the Fast & Furious actor recalled how he was sent a book of concept art to choose a character from. He stated,

“I went to meet with Kevin Feige for a couple hours to talk. A couple of weeks later, Marvel sent over a book of concept art and they had this crazy idea that kind of played to the Iron Giant character I played in the beginning of my career.”

Diesel then added how his son, Vincent Sinclair, who was three years old at that time, helped him choose Groot.

“And what sealed the deal for me was when I opened up the giant book of concept art and fell in love with the character Groot. I asked my son which character he thought Daddy should play, and my son, Vincent, who was three at the time, pointed to the tree. And something about that made me feel like it was going to be the perfect match.”

This was just the perfect touch to add to the adorableness of the character. Diesel’s son choosing the character for him might be a sentimental reason why the actor hasn’t said goodbye to Groot yet!
