Starfield is one of the biggest video game launches of the year, and it was a game that was hyped up and highly anticipated. Developed by storied studio Bethesda and directed by the famous Todd Howard, the game is described as their most ambitious project, even more so than previous games such The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Fallout 4.

It’s not just the impressive character creator, customization options, player freedom or strong combat that makes a game with the size and scope of Starfield successful, it’s the little things too. Whether it be twenty thousand potatoes, all of them with their own physics, or something else entirely, these small factors end up being quite memorable. Now, one player has discovered something that can be added to this list.

What discovery did one player make in Starfield?

User ICCanada took to Reddit to explain what he encountered in Starfield. They explained their character build as:

“I’m playing a white-coat scientist build. Mostly, I’m just taking survey missions, and 100%ing as many planets as I can. It’s my laid-back build, and it’s a super-chill gameplay arc, for the most part.”

Definitely a relaxing build free from complex moral choices, death, and destruction, ICCanada faced one surprising problem, which was the beetles he encountered, or didn’t encounter while exploring planets. When they were very close to fully surveying a planet, they would discover that they needed to scan/analyze the beetles to complete the survey, but the beetles proved difficult to encounter.

But the player knew that the beetles in Starfield contained “scavenger” in their names, which gave them a clue as to what role they carried out in the planet’s ecosystem. To locate the beetles, ICCanada decided to follow one of the “predator” marked animals till they hunted a “prey” animal which they then killed. This thought process paid off as a beetle, a scavenger, made its long-awaited appearance to have its fill.

What does the discovery mean?

This discovery is proof that the planets in Starfield make use of food chains. There are several species of animals engaging with each other in various ways at any given point, which shows a lot of thought has gone into developing the setting of the game. This is despite most of the planets being procedurally generated, except for a few notable locations being intricately created by Bethesda.

Discoveries such as this one show the sheer scope and flexibility of role-playing games (RPGs) and how much freedom they can offer players, with many such as ICCanada doing and discovering things that most wouldn’t have thought of. Instead of playing the campaign and side missions as a scientist, they chose to play as someone who explores planets, showing the amount of depth Starfield has.
