It’s been more than two decades since director Brett Ratner threw two contrasting characters into the mix and gave them the freedom to generate plenty of laughs through nothing but their unorthodox chemistry in the classic cop buddy movie Rush Hour.

In the movie, Chris Tucker’s James Carter, a wisecracking LAPD officer, and Jackie Chan’s Hong Kong Detective Inspector Lee find themselves working together after a Chinese diplomat’s daughter is kidnapped in Los Angeles. The chemistry between Tucker, who cares more about partying and eating, and Lee, who is very sincere about his duties, managed to impress fans, leading to two more sequels.

Lee and Carter are so popular now that many fans end up assuming Chan and Tucker’s personalities behind the scenes are also the same. As far as talking is concerned, many interviews do suggest the latter is more talkative than the former. Interestingly, when it comes to partying, Chan, in his 20s, was closer to Carter than Lee.

Chan talked about how his uneducated younger self handled the shock of instantly becoming a millionaire overnight. “All day I’d drink and drive, in the morning bashing a Porsche, in the evening bashing a Mercedes. Every day I was in this dizzied state,” the actor said in the Chinese-language version of the book [via Variety].

During an appearance on George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight in 2012, while talking about his responsibilities he touched on the same subject, and revealed how a visit to a children’s hospital opened his eyes.

“When you get there, you get at the hospital and you see all the children coming, hugging you and they just look at you, crying,” he said.

The 69-year-old further added that he went to the hospital after being persuaded by individuals around him, and didn’t take any gifts for the children. As such when he saw the people at the hospital distributing gifts on his behalf and all the kids thanked him for the same, he felt embarrassed. “I was so embarrassed, I hate myself,” he described the experience.

Why Jackie Chan’s Son Won’t Get Any Share From His $400 Million Fortune

Chris Tucker and Chan’s The Rush Hour franchise is just one of Chan’s many blockbuster projects. The universal action hero, who made his debut in Hollywood with The Big Brawl in 1980 remained a regular feature in the industry for more than three decades and during his peak was among the highest-paid actors in the world. Accordingly, he has amassed a net worth in the region of $400 million.

However, the much-loved superstar doesn’t intend to pass over his massive fortune to his son, Jaycee Chan. In his memoir, he wrote [via LadBible] that he wants his son to earn his way in the world. Jaycee, now 40, is an actor and musician.

It’s clear Chan understands – from his own tricky experiences – how bad things can go with too much money at one’s disposal.
