While Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is a member of the original Avengers faction, his first entry wasn’t exactly as impactful as the rest of his peers. Although the later entries in the MCU, especially Avengers: Age of Ultron, take a deep dive into his story and Hawkeye gets his moment to shine in Avengers: Endgame, his MCU debut left a lot to be desired for the actor.
Back in 2012, The Avengers took the world by storm upon its release, and while it succeeded in handling most of the characters with perfection, some did have to take a step backward. Among these, the most notable one was Renner’s Hawkeye and it was frustrating for the actor.
Working on The Avengers was a frustrating experience for Jeremy Renner
Unlike Joss Whedon‘s Age of Ultron, which witnesses a deeper dive into Hawkeye and his family, the same can’t be said for The Avengers, as for the most part, he was one of Loki’s hypnotized minions. Keeping in mind this was his MCU debut, not getting to play the character for real for the most part was a frustrating experience for Jeremy Renner. Per The Guardian, he said,
“That was my first chance getting to play the character and I wasn’t really getting to play him at all. ‘Hi, my name’s Clint – bzzzzzzzzz. It was frustrating. I don’t even know at that point how the guy walks and talks, ’cos he got turned into this other dude. Joss [Whedon] was really apologetic. He had an impossible task trying to fit all those characters into one movie.”
Thankfully, things worked out during his next outing, making Hawkeye a fan-favorite, and Renner was glad he “got to find the character next time around.”
Jeremy Renner will don the suit if Marvel asks him
While there is no confirmation regarding Hawkeye’s next appearance in the MCU, Jeremy Renner hasn’t shut down the possibilities. During an appearance at the Phoenix Fan Fusion event (via X), the actor, who suffered a gruesome injury earlier this year following a snowplow accident, stated that he is ready to reprise the role whenever Marvel asks him.
“If Marvel wants me back, I’ll do it in a heartbeat.”
Considering the MCU is busy crafting the next set of the World’s mightiest heroes, it might be a long wait before the original member of the Avengers returns to the big screen.
The Avengers is available to stream on Disney Plus.
