2021’s Don’t Look Up, featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio, was a satire of society’s response to impending global crises. The film was praised for its comedy despite mixed reviews and even got a thumbs up from the scientists for its scientific accuracy. Receiving four Academy Award nominations, the film was regarded as one of the best films of 2021.
The film was released in the theatres for a very short period as it was quickly released on Netflix. The film stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, received massive salaries for their work in the movie. It is not surprising as they are two of the biggest stars in Hollywood right now, so naturally, their salaries are high.
Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio were paid a combined $55 million for their work in 2021’s Don’t Look Up
The budget for director Adam McKay’s 2021 movie Don’t Look Up was $75 million and the salaries of its stars, Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio, were a combined $55 million, out of which DiCaprio got $30 million, while Lawrence was paid $25 million.
The massive salaries made sense as their influence is quite high and their name is enough to fill up the theatres. The film was released in the theatres in the United States on December 10, 2021, but ended its run roughly 10 days later. The film was then released on Netflix on December 24 and became the most-streamed English-language film on the platform during its first week of release.
Jennifer Lawrence was happy with her salary despite getting less than Leonardo DiCaprio
When the salaries of the two stars were revealed, there were several debates over DiCaprio getting more than Lawrence for her work in the movie. Lawrence quickly addressed the topic, defending DiCaprio’s salary (via Vanity Fair)
“Leo brings in more box office than I do. I’m extremely fortunate and happy with my deal.”
The film was nominated for four Academy Awards in the categories, Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing. The National Board of Review and American Film Institute named the film as one of the top ten films of 2021.
