Award shows are notoriously boring. Many celebrities have spoken up about the fact these ceremonies are unnecessarily dragged on and, a lot of the times, shine the spotlight on those who are undeserving of the honor. It would seem that Almodóvar is one such individual who feels the same, as the director spoke on the subject in quite a detail, specifically talking about the 2022 Oscars. He also talked about a highlight of this ceremony, which, for him, was telling a bad joke to Al Pacino and Javier Bardem.

Pedro Pascal’s Film Director Hated The Oscars

There were many memorable things that happened during the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony, however, the most memorable moment, and perhaps the one which will most certainly go down in history would have to be the fact that Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, on stage, in a room full of Hollywood’s finest, on live television.

Many celebrities had many different reactions to what happened, with some thinking that it was part of a set, and some being concerned about what had just happened. The common sentiment in the general public, including celebrities, was that what happened was not right in any way, shape, or form.

“what I saw and heard,” wrote Almodóvar, “produced a feeling of absolute rejection in me.” he went on, “a speech that seemed more like that of a cult leader. You don’t defend or protect the family with your fists, and no, the devil doesn’t take advantage of key moments to do his work.” he added, “This was a fundamentalist speech that we should neither hear nor see. Some claim that it was the only real moment in the ceremony, but they are talking about the faceless monster that is the social media. For them, avid for carrion, it undoubtedly was the great event of the night.”

It seems that Pedro Pascal‘s film, Strange Way Of Life’s director, Pedro Almodóvar is amongst these people, who have a lot of feelings towards what happened, as well as award shows in general. The director spoke to IndieWire and told them how he thought what Smith did was completely inexcusable, adding that it was outrageous that the actor, after what happened, won an award and went and gave a speech.

He stated that this was to “satisfy their spectators, who get bored to death when they don’t see a famous face (if possible on the verge of a nervous breakdown) and instead see unknown, emotional people who at that moment of their wins remember all their relatives with a drama as if they’ve been victims of a tsunami.”

He then went on to talk about the pre-telecast ceremony for eight craft categories, stating that he does not like the fact that these are not televised. He added that this is done to satisfy the audiences, who only care to watch the bigger, more known categories and not the ones that, in his opinion, have more meaning.

Pedro Almodóvar Made A Bad Joke At The Oscars

Due to all of the things that Pedro Almodóvar did not like about the ceremony, it wouldn’t be all too far-fetched to say that there were very few good moments for him at the Oscars, the director did share them with IndieWire. He started by talking about how the room was extremely cold and Nicole Kidman and Penélope Cruz were warped in their husband’s suit jackets.

“It’s a mass of talent. Javier doesn’t stop hugging him and Pacino smiles, delighted. I say: ‘You, Al Pacino. Me, Al Modóvar.’ Javier roars with laughter. I think it’s the worst joke I’ve made in my life.”

The directors of Pedro Pascal’s Strange Way Of Life also talked about how he made a terrible joke in front of the Academy-Award-winning actors, Al Pacino and Javier Bardem. He revealed that Bardem could not stop hugging him and then went on to reveal what this joke was. The director ended up making fun of how his last name and Pacino’s name sound a little similar.
