Jada Pinkett Smith was Scared of Her Financial Situation

Growing up in a house with an addict is far from easy. Unfortunately, Jada Pinkett Smith understands that. The fear of ever having to prepare herself every single night about whether or not her mother would return home at all or die was something she had tragically gotten used to. While talking to People, she explained how it had given her a sense of independence as well.

“Even though I always had a regular job, I just wanted more financial freedom, you know? Also out of the fear of like what if something does happen to my mother. What if my mother does die? What if she doesn’t come home one night? You know, either overdosed, arrested, whatever, and so, I decided to sell drugs.”

She opened up about how because of her mother’s addiction, there was never any sense of financial freedom in her life. Her dependency on her had limited her to the fears of what could happen to Pinkett Smith’s mother. Although she had a regular job at that age, she needed something more concrete, to ensure that even if her mother was not to return, she would not find herself spiraling.

Jada Pinkett Smith Found a Means of Survival in Cocaine

In her interview with People, she elaborated on just how she found this financial independence for herself. It was by selling drugs that she found a way to survive in the lifestyle she was pushed into. Despite knowing the dangers that came with it, she admitted that it had been her solace at that point.

“I decided to sell crack cocaine. Just along the way, it just kind of leveled up and that was my solution at that particular time to survive. And it really, it helped me survive you know. But it put me in a lot of danger and I hurt a lot of people along the way.”

Pinkett Smith had to come to terms with the fact that her job meant that she would hurt a lot of people she knew. However, in the long run, it did not matter because it gave her the security she was yearning for.
