The Daily Wire (a conservative media company) announced on Monday that they are making their own live-action Snow White movie in response to backlash from right-wing over Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White adaptation.
The movie will be titled Snow White and the Evil Queen, starring YouTuber and media personality Brett Cooper as the princess and the main lead.
The film is based on the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale, which is in the public domain now. It means that the story and its elements are not protected by copyright and can be freely used and adapted by anyone.
The Daily Wire Announces Live-Action Snow White Adaptation
The Daily Wire co-founder Jeremy Boreing made the announcement when launching Bentkey — the new kids’ entertainment brand under The Daily Wire. The goal of this brand is to compete with Disney+ in the realm of children’s entertainment. It came just after some conservatives grew frustrated with the legacy studio.
Boreing said their movie’s story is about “a princess and a prince, about beauty and vanity, about love and its power to raise us from death to life.” He told that it is their own adaptation of an ancient fairy tale. The co-founder added (via The Hollywood Reporter):
“It’s taken 100 years to build Disney. We know we aren’t what Disney is today, but we hope in time we might become what they were, once upon a time: a little studio with big ideas and the courage to chase them … While Disney still uses Walt’s name, they have all but abandoned his legacy …”
Cooper, who hosts the Daily Wire-produced show The Comments Section With Brett Cooper, said she was “raised on the original Grimms’ Fairy Tales,” so she is thrilled that they’re “bringing this iconic story to life for the next generation!”
The YouTuber added that she can’t wait to share “timeless values, like love, friendship, and kindness,” on which its story is based. She also feels extremely honored to play Snow White, addressing it as a “beautiful character.”
Daily Wire Takes Action Amid Disney’s Snow White Remake Controversy
This move came after Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs sparked some cultural controversy. The issue occurred with the casting of West Side Story star Rachel Zegler as the titular Snow White.
The backlash was generated due to her not meeting the description in the upcoming film as what is described (“skin as white as snow”) in the original Brothers Grimm story.
And there’s one more reason. The production decided to change the seven dwarfs into a diverse group of magical creatures with different sizes and genders.
The 22-year-old Zegler caused a stir when her comments from late last year resurfaced. These comments suggested that she didn’t like the original film and that the new movie would have a very different approach to the iconic character (via Cosmopolitan).
Disney’s Snow White is scheduled for release on March 22, 2024. But there is no further information about the Daily Wire’s Snow White and the Evil Queen project.
