Topher Grace portrayed Eddie Brock/Venom in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, but it received mixed reactions from fans as they believed he and director Sam Raimi failed to deliver and give it justice. And so, Grace thought of revisiting this memory by suggesting an idea for his Home Economics series.

Tom Hardy replaced Grace in the 2018 reboot film, gaining massive success at the box office and securing a sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Topher Grace Pitched An Ad Promo Poking Fun At Venom

In his appearance in Late Night with Seth Meyers, Predators actor Topher Grace revealed he had an idea for a promo for Venom 2 and Home Economics. Unfortunately, there was no way they could pull it off due to conflict in schedule. He said:

I actually had this idea. We couldn’t make it work as an ad, because Home Economics premiered literally like, one day from when Venom 2 was gonna premiere. And I was like, ‘We should do an ad.’ They just couldn’t – It was, like, Sony and Disney, and they couldn’t figure it out.”

Grace described the proposal as a way to revisit and make a little fun of his portrayal of Venom. The actor further explained:

[A]ll of our characters on Home Economics were sitting watching the trailer for Venom 2… I’m like, ‘Who even is this guy?’ They go, ‘Oh, he’s so jacked. He looks great.’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know, I don’t know.’ Like, ‘Who is Tom Hardy?’ And they’re like, ‘You know, Mad Max and, like, Dunkirk.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, but is he, like, a good actor?’ And they all say, ‘Yeah, he’s been nominated for an Academy Award.’ I’m like, ‘Okay, but, like, comic book villain?’ And they’re like, ‘Bane, yeah. He’s, like, amazing!’

He mentioned that Sony and Disney could not bring this pitch to life perhaps due to rights issues and even time constraints. Still, it would have been a marvelous idea.

Interestingly enough, Tom Holland’s 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home saw the return of the hero’s original antagonists from Sam Raimi’s movies. Sadly, Grace’s version of Eddie Brock was not present, though Hardy would appear in the movie’s post-credit scenes.

Topher Grace has expressed his admiration for Tom Hardy and his take on the character of Venom. Indeed, the Interstellar actor admitted he was surprised when Sony gave him the job. He thinks Hardy has done the villain justice, as he described via Inside Of You with Michael Rosenbaum:

I was a huge fan of the character of Venom when I was a kid when Todd McFarlane brought him into the comic. I was a huge fan of it. And I was surprised and a little bit like ‘Huh?’ when they wanted me to play it. So when I look at it now, at the movie that’s coming out, I go ‘That’s the guy.’ In terms of how I think the guy should be played and who should play it.”

A Venom spin-off was reportedly planned right after the third Spider-Man film, but because of the audience’s negative reception, it was scrapped. Channing Tatum was even rumored to play Venom in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 before the franchise was rebooted again.
