In the latest Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 episode, the Jujutsu sorcerers finish a tough fight against the powerful cursed spirit Dagon. Jogo attacks Kento Nanami, Maki Zenin, and Naobito Zenin after mourning Dagon’s death.
For manga fans, this moment brings mixed emotions. As they already know, despite serious injuries, Nanami and Maki survive. But Nanami will have a sad encounter with Mahito in the future, changing the story.
On the other hand, Maki Zenin undergoes a big transformation after this episode and becomes one of the series’ strongest characters. She’ll play a big role in the JJK manga and has her growth explored in a dedicated arc where she becomes the next Toji.
Spoiler Alert: The article contains major spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen manga.
How Maki Becomes New Toji?
Maki Zenin’s part in the Shibuya arc ends when Jogo defeats her after Toji Fushiguro beats Dagon. Maki survives Jogo’s attempt to burn her because her body has extraordinary abilities.
Later, Maki undergoes a significant change that not only alters how she looks but also gives her immense strength. However, these internal changes come from experiencing terrible hardship and loss.
In Jujutsu Kaisen manga Chapter 148, Maki returns to the Zenin clan to retrieve the Cursed Tools stored in their warehouse. Her father, Ogi Zenin, had anticipated her move and not only got rid of the tools but also attempted to harm Maki and Mai, who was already there, as a consequence of his failures.
During a battle where they were both close to dying, Mai, as a final effort, created a powerful weapon and gave it to Maki. However, she lost her life in doing so and removed the Cursed Energy from Maki.
This made Maki incredibly strong physically, almost reaching the level of Toji Fushiguro, as even the small amount of Cursed Energy an average human possesses was taken away from her.
As per the rules of Cursed Energy, monozygotic twins are seen as a single entity, limiting both Maki and Mai from using their full abilities. But Mai’s sacrifice removed this restriction, granting Maki unmatched physical strength. In exchange, Mai only requested one thing from her sister: to destroy everything.
Maki Slaughtered Her Entire Clan
The killing began, but it was expected because of how the Zenin clan treated its own people. Toji Fushiguro was also powerful due to a special ability he had. He, too, was mistreated by the clan and ended up leaving, taking his wife’s name.
Maki and Mai were also treated badly by their family and others in the clan. Their dad blamed them for his own failure, and their mother was disappointed in them because they didn’t fit the clan’s idea of how women should act. Even when Maki was bullied as a kid, her parents didn’t help.
All this mistreatment and hate built up over time, and when an attempt was made on their lives, Maki had enough. She ended up wiping out the entire clan.
