With the Marvel Cinematic Universe entangling with the idea of the Multiverse and Norse mythology, a beautiful creation was introduced during the season finale of Loki. With Tom Hiddleston’s character ascending the throne at the end, the World Tree or Yggdrasil stems from his hands which holds the fate of the Multiverse.

Believe it or not, but the fate of Loki merging and becoming the World Tree was teased 10 years back in Thor: The Dark World when Loki spoke that ascending the throne was his birthright. There are also two other mentions of the World Tree with the first ever mention in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor.

In Captain America: The First Avenger, Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull finds the Tesseract behind a sculpture of the World Tree or Yggdrasil. In Thor, Chris Hemsworth’s character also mentions to Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) that it was the World Tree that held all the nine realms together. Well, with the ramifications in the MCU, it could be said that now the World Tree and Loki are holding the Multiverse together with each branch of the tree representing a universe and a timeline!

All right, this one takes a deep dive into Norse mythology. In 2011, Red Skull sees Yggdrasil and presses the eye of a snake eating its own tail. Although the symbol is called an ouroboros, the serpent was actually the World Serpent according to Nordic Mythology.

Entailing the Earth by forming a circle and biting its own tail, the World Serpent is called Jormungandr and what’s more harrowing is that Jormungandr is actually a child of Loki! With director Taika Waititi following Norse mythology with the destruction of Asgard in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, it could be a very feasible theory that Jormungandr could soon awake and wreak havoc on Earth. The comics are somewhat following the Nordic mythology but, it would be an amazing moment if Jormungandr or The World Serpent wakes up and has a battle with Thor!

As of now, these are all theories and speculations. Nothing can be confirmed or denied yet but what we do know for sure is that the MCU is not going to stay the same after Loki Season 2.
