Tom Hiddleston has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade now, fourteen years to be exact. His entire run has been a transformative journey that supports the growth of his character. From a villain to a hero, he becomes the iconic character fans now know him as. In the years since passed, there have been certain theories and questions left unanswered regarding the God of Mischief.
It is obvious that when science fiction and mythology come together, there are certain changes that take place. From Fenrir’s existence to Thor and Loki’s relationship. There were a lot of things that came into play. One factor that was part of Loki’s character since the beginning was that he is a Frost Giant. It was Odin’s powers that allowed him to look the way he does, so why was he looking the same in the TVA?
Tom Hiddleston’s Loki’s True Self in Not Just a Frost Giant
It is explained in Loki that magic is naught of power in the TVA. This renders any powerful objects such as Infinity Stones and magical beings powerless. In theory, this should also take away the facade that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki keeps up with his appearance. It was Odin’s abilities that allowed him to look the way that he did and not his original self as the Frost Giant.
So why did he not change back to normal once he entered the TVA? Many would think it to be a continuity error but that is not entirely the case. In Norse Mythology Loki was commonly seen to be a shapeshifter. Even in the MCU, he was able to switch in and out of faces with ease. One possibility for why he did not change is because it is new magic that the TVA is immune to and not old magic.
Another reason for the same could be as to how spells are permanent. Especially when it is related to Odin. Spells made by Odin seem to hold power despite his own death. Such is the case with Mjolnir as well. In a similar fashion, Loki’s spell also lasts beyond the walls of the TVA, allowing Loki to exist with a face he prefers.
Loki’s True Self as an Odinson
Asgard is not a place it is a people. This is a line said time and again in the MCU. For Loki, his journey transitioned from being a Frost Giant to an Asgardian. He accepted himself as is and even
in the comics the changes in his appearance were more so seen as something he did on his own accord than as part of a spell or magic. Throughout the years, Loki has accepted himself to be an Odinson.
His ability to change and shapeshift was not something limited to magic but an innate ability. Loki learns to see himself as an Asgardian and not as a Frost Giant, bending his appearance in the same manner.
