The hype for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is far less than what many would have expected the last film of the DC Extended Universe to garner. That fact in itself might have had an impact as well. Yet there are other contributors. Amber Heard leads the list, with the bad press from the landmark Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial. There are other factors at work as well – some of which are down to DC Extended Universe’s dismal planning.
Aquaman and the Lost Chance
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom did not have the best of test screenings. As the movie faces the ominous fate of being the last entry in the DC Extended Universe, there couldn’t have been a worse beginning for them.
Multiple reshoots were needed (most of them fell through in the end). But the fate of the movie was already settled at that point. Its bad publicity has ensured that. Fans couldn’t be less excited for the film as its release draws nigh. And one of the reasons is a cameo in The Flash that triggered fans left, right, and center.
Jason Momoa’s cameo in The Flash irked many
The Flash was one of the most ambitious projects in the DCEU. It marked the introduction of the multiverse in the DCEU, a development that was presumed to be a game changer. But it was not meant to be, as the Ezra Miller starrer bombed. And what is shocking is its impact on the fate of Jason Momoa starrer – all because of a cameo.
The See star had a cameo in The Flash, one which involved him getting caught in a late-night bar crawl and stumbling upon Barry Allen. It was the first time fans saw the King of Atlanta after his appearance in Aquaman. And it was not what many of them would have hoped for.
Jason Momoa’s unruly behavior under the radar
The drunken stumble also pointed many fans to an unfavorable Jason Momoa rumor – one that points out that he once went to the set while in an intoxicated state. The news came to light after some people paid the Court fees for obtaining access to Court documents, including her therapist’s scribbled notes. The notes read as follows (via Variety):
“Jason said he wanted me fired. Jason drunk — late on set. Dressing like Johnny. Has all the rings too.”
The news of a toxic work environment on the sets of Aquaman 2 began to spread. A cameo that made a similar insinuation was the last thing the movie could have asked for, further dampening its prospects.
