Jason Momoa’s Aquaman 2 opened amidst very low expectations on December 22, 2023. The film is the last feature in the pre-James Gunn DCU and Momoa’s last stint as the character. The cast barely promoted the film and the film received lackluster reviews from critics and audiences.

However, the film has performed comparatively better than all the 2023 DCU films which have terribly flopped at the box office. The film has now passed the $300 million mark and is expected to pass Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam by the end of its theatrical run.
Despite Minimal Promotions, Aquaman 2 Poised to Beat Dwayne Johnson Film

James Wan returned with Jason Momoa for the sequel to their highly successful 2018 Aquaman film at the end of 2023. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom opened to mediocre reviews and most fans were not happy with how the film ended the Zack Snyder-era DCU.
However, the film has had a better hold at the box office compared to all the 2023 DCU films which have not even gotten past the $300 million mark. Now according to Home of DCU, the film is set to breach past the $400 million mark by the end of its theatrical run. This would put the film as the highest-grossing DCU film since the first Aquaman in 2018.
This would also mean that the film will pass Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, which only managed to earn $393 million even after extensive promotions and big promises laid by Johnson himself (which eventually fizzled out). It is rather shocking that Aquaman 2 which had little to no hype whatsoever and released with minimal promotions, is going to earn more than Johnson’s much-hyped DCU fare.
Jason Momoa Would Love to Play Lobo in James Gunn’s DCU

Jason Momoa‘s tenure as Aquaman has finally come to an end with Aquaman 2. While the film was not well received, it is performing better than any of the 2023 DCU releases and may become the highest-grossing DCU film since the first Aquaman film. While promoting the film and speaking to Fandango, the actor expressed that he would love to play the DC character Lobo in James Gunn’s DCU.
The rumors of him playing the character have been swirling over the past few months and Fandango directly posed the question to the actor. Momoa revealed that Lobo is his favorite comic character and it would be the perfect casting. He also claimed that If Gunn and DC ever approached him, he would immediately jump at the opportunity. He said,
“So Lobo was… I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role.’ I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a f*ck yeah. I haven’t received that call, so I don’t want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.”

It remains to be seen whether Gunn recruits Momoa to play Lobo in his DCU. For now, Momoa has other films in the pipeline, including the drama In the Hand of Dante and the live-action adaptation of the popular video game Minecraft.
