John Cena’s 2015 film Trainwreck put him on the radar of Hollywood and he started getting opportunities to appear in the superhero world. In an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Cena reflected on missing out on some major Marvel and DC roles in the past.

He revealed that he was rejected for roles like Shazam in the DCU, a role which he was very interested in playing. He also claimed that he tried to get a role in the Deadpool world but ended up losing the opportunity. He said,

“I can’t tell you how many superhero roles I’ve been rejected for. Shazam is certainly one. I think like a child, so Shazam was super interesting to me…And when I read the script, a lot of times, like… this is the thing, I don’t chase ‘I want to do this,’ I always have to read it.

There was a brief try at the Deadpool universe, rejection. There were a few in the Marvel universe, rejected. But you know, I keep trying.”

Cena was in the running for Cable in Deadpool 2, but the role eventually went to Josh Brolin. However, these rejections led to him nabbing his most recognized role in James Gunn’s Peacemaker, with him playing the titular role.

John Cena‘s Peacemaker series was a great addition to the DCU with Cena having a ball with his wild and entertaining titular character. The series was created and directed by James Gunn and season 1 had a cameo appearance of other DCU characters like Aquaman and Flash.

However, with the soft reboot of the DCU, fans are wondering how the second season will address the change and whether it will ease into the new DCU without any confusion. When fans posed the question on Threads, Gunn assured them that he would make sure that everything fell into place and no plotholes arose due to the changing DCU. He said,

“You’ll have to wait and see how that works out! Because it’s my favorite thing to do, it’s the biggest original Max show ever, and I have a way in. It won’t be confusing.”
