His devil fruit name was also changed and it was revealed that what fans thought to be the Rubber devil fruit, was actually named as Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. Also, as the series entered its final saga, Luffy’s Gear 5 abilities were seen as he fought Navy’s Admiral Kizaru and defeated him easily.

During both of his fights, Luffy’s devil fruit has shown the ability that combine two categories together: Zoan and Paramecia type which is truly an incredible but mysterious feat. However, no one knows how it happened. There have been many theories developed around this question but no one truly knows the right answer.

Luffy’s Gear 5 Technique in One Piece

Gear 5 is an awakened version of the Hito Hito no mi (Model: Nika), which strengthens the user’s rubbery body. Like a Paramecia awakening, it also gives the user the power to change and manipulate their surroundings. It gives the user more god-like strength and flexibility for their rubber body, so they can fight however they choose.

Because of this, the fruit’s power is referred to as “the most ridiculous power in the world,” and it is said that the user becomes the “Warrior of Liberation,” bringing happiness and freedom to those around them. Luffy’s form possessed the traits and abilities of both a Zoan-type and Paramecia-type awakening during his battle with Kaido.

Kaido and the fans were perplexed by this, as the previous episode had disclosed that Luffy’s actual Devil Fruit was a Mythical Zoan form. However, a theory explains how Luffy’s Gear 5 combines two devil fruit powers at the same time making the one of the most dangerous strengths in One Piece’s world.

How Luffy’s Gear 5 Combines Two Devil Fruit Powers

The theory states that the Awakened form of the Nika fruit grants its users the ability to “fight as they please” and the most “ridiculous” fighting capability in the world. With the Gear 5 form, the user is not restricted by rules or limitations and can utilize their creativity to create any desired effect.

This theory explains why Luffy used abilities of both the Paramecia and Zoan types when he was in his Gear 5 form. This theory essentially holds that Luffy’s Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika defies the reasoning behind typical devil fruits. The theory fits with One Piece’s theme of adventure and freedom, even though Oda hasn’t confirmed it.
