Hugh Jackman is set to reprise his role as Wolverine in the much-anticipated upcoming film, Deadpool 3. Recent updates suggest that Jackman plays a substantial role in the film, with even some reports hinting at the name of the movie as Deadpool and Wolverine. However, Jackman might want the film to respect his one earlier wish about the character, which the other X-Men films had done with the character.
Hugh Jackman first appeared as the character in the ensemble film, X-Men, in 2000. He landed his first standalone movie with X-Men Origins: Wolverine and ended his arc in the 20th Century Fox movies with Logan.
Hugh Jackman Revealed One Wolverine Characteristic He Wants To Keep
Hugh Jackman opened up about his character, Wolverine, during an interview with First Showing. Jackman revealed that over the course of films starting from X-Men to X-Men: Days of Future Past, his character experienced an evolution. He shared that the character lived through a lot of regret and pain. This vulnerability caused him to become a loner and less trusting.
With the help of Professor X and Jean Grey, Logan underwent a significant transformation to a more open and trusting personality. He also learned to rely on his X-Men friends in the movies. Jackman told First Showing:
“He’s someone who lives with a lot of regret and pain and, weirdly, vulnerability underneath. His natural thing, which I think is the same for a lot of people, is to retreat, to be a loner, to not rely, to not trust, to actually close off from the world. His journey has been, probably because he’s been encouraged by Professor X and maybe Jean and others, his journey has been to actually open up and to actually trust and learn to rely on other people, which is not in his DNA.”
While Jackman appreciated the character’s healing journey, he also didn’t want the character to lose one major characteristic. Jackman wanted the films to further explore the character’s lone wolf side. The Real Steel actor shared with First Showing that he didn’t want Wolverine to heal and lose his badass quality. He explained:
“I don’t want him to completely do that because I don’t want him to lose his badass kinda quality. I think it’s a great thing to learn, that idea that, yeah, everybody finds it hard to trust and relate. That’s just one side. There are so many different sides to him.”
Hugh Jackman’s wish came true in his last appearance as Wolverine in Logan, the last film in the previous X-Men universe. He was back to hurting over the losses he had over the years and unleashed his most loner self in the film. Logan went on to gross $619.2 million and even received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Hugh Jackman May Want Deadpool 3 To Respect This Wolverine Characteristic
Deadpool 3 is expected to be as goofy as the first two films in the Deadpool film series. While fans are excited, they also have concerns that the film will make a mockery out of the serious character of Wolverine. This concern became especially prominent after Deadpool 3 came under the larger umbrella of Marvel’s MCU films.
Fans are still not over how She-Hulk: Attorney at Law did Charlie Cox‘s Daredevil dirty, making him into a comical playboy. There were also criticisms against characters like Wong and Hulk, who started as pretty serious characters in the MCU but were recently made into comic reliefs. Jackman may want the MCU to honor his earlier wish and make Wolverine rough around the edges.
Deadpool 3 is scheduled to be released on July 26, 2024.
