Deadpool 3 is going to debut Wolverine’s classic costume in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it’s not the first time we have seen Wolverine’s costume in a live-action setting, at least when it comes to canon, studio-produced material. In a deleted scene of 2013’s The Wolverine, the film was supposed to close out on Logan receiving a suitcase from Yukio, one containing his iconic, comic-accurate suit.
A new theory regarding Deadpool 3 states that the film will take place in a timeline where the new suit was indeed presented to Logan. In this new timeline, Wolverine would know that Professor X has returned from the dead and has teamed up with Magneto. This timeline would eventually culminate in X-Men: Days of Future Past, which means the film could explore what happened in the time between The Wolverine and the last film in the original timeline: Days of Future Past.
Other elements from Wolverine’s past in Japan could show up in the MCU
The Wolverine saw Logan protect Mariko Yashida, whose father and grandfather have involved themselves in a grand scheme to harvest Logan’s abilities to become immortal. What must also be pointed out here is that Wolverine has a tryst with Mariko, who eventually takes up the mantle of Scarlet Samurai. Also, among Wolverine’s connections to Japan, is his son Daken, who could be adapted as the son of Mariko and Logan in the timeline where he receives his yellow suit.
Deadpool 3 is already set to bring characters from Logan’s past to the forefront, as set leaks have revealed to us that Wolverine and Deadpool will be clashing with Sabretooth. Sabretooth has recently become embroiled with Wolverine again in the comics, starting the infamous Sabretooth War by killing Daken.
Wolverine could embark on a roaring rampage of revenge against those who came after his family, who could then hire Wade to create some sort of misunderstanding. This is how we could see Wade and Wolverine clash, and then eventually team up against the likes of Sabretooth.
Deadpool 3 is an important film for the MCU
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has fallen on some tough times. Where once the entire franchise was celebrated and its mistakes were forgotten easily, seems to can’t catch a break anymore. Entry after entry has culminated in massive hits, with The Marvels being the first proper flob that the studio has delivered. This was no doubt a wake-up call for the executives, as Disney too seems to be making good on its promise of quality over quantity, with Deadpool 3 being the only release from the studio in 2024.
Deadpool 3 is potentially the first film from the franchise that is set in a completely different continuity than other entries in the MCU, as it will pick up where Deadpool 2 left off. What’s more, it will be the first Marvel Studios entry to completely focus on its mutant population, making Deadpool 3 a turning point for the MCU.
Deadpool 3 hits theatres on July 26th, 2024.
