Marvel and X-Men fans are extremely excited to have Huge Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool finally unite for an action-packed adventure in a capacity reminiscent of their comic book origin, in Deadpool 3. But just like the comics, this won’t be the first time the two characters will meet on the big screen.

All the way back in 2009, Fox released the gloriously received X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which turned out to be a critical failure. The movie featured the origins of Wolverine, while also introducing the character of Wade Wilson and how he became Deadpool. Despite featuring the origins of two of the most beloved Marvel characters, the movie is generally considered trash, and just like the fans, both Jackman and Reynolds would want to forget their first-time screen-sharing experience.

A debut that even fans would want to forget, X-Men Origins: Wolverine featured the backstory of two of the most fan-favorite Marvel characters. The 2009 superhero film featured the complicated childhood of James Howlett aka Wolverine while also featuring how he got his indestructible adamantium skeleton as well as his relationship with half-brother Victor Creed.

Furthermore, the movie touched upon the origins of Deadpool as well with him transforming into the lethal killer, Weapon XI. Appearing as his mouth surgically sealed, Wade Wilson had retractable arm blades and powers like teleportation and laser eye beams, powers that have no precedent in the comic books whatsoever.

Made against a budget of $150 million, the film grossed $373 worldwide, making it a commercial success (via Box Office Mojo). Yet when it comes to critical reviews, the film has a splendid rating of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 40-point score on Metacritic, and mixed reviews on other platforms.

Labeled an OK movie, the film was criticized by fans and critics alike for not being a faithful adaptation and for being so overly complicated that no one could really make sense of it at all. And so, just like fans, even Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds would want to forget their first Marvel movie together.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a cinematic disaster as far as superhero movies are concerned. Even the whole production of the movie was complicated, from Reynolds writing all his lines to him being forced to play the character (see Screen Rant), there were countless things that the cast and the fans had a problem with.

While the movie ultimately helped Reynolds get back on his feet and star as Deadpool in Deadpool, Deadpool 2 and now Deadpool 3, it almost made Huge Jackman say goodbye to his fan-favorite character once and for all.

When the film was brutally chewed out by fans and critics, the Logan star lost all hope of starring in an X-Men movie again, as he once revealed to Entertainment Weekly. Not being able to see what the next thing was, the fans’ reaction to the movie only added more to his woes of the future.

Reynolds too called the movie an absolute trash fire and jokingly blamed it on his co-star for the way it turned out (via Variety). While we all love to trash-talk the movie, there is no denying that it ultimately turned out to be instrumental in making Deadpool and Wolverine reunite in what will definitely be 100x better than their first Marvel movie together.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine can be streamed on Disney+, while Deadpool 3 will be in the theatres on July 26, 2024.
