Over the span of almost 30 years, Monkey D. Before the Time Skip, when Luffy first found the ability to accelerate his blood using Gear 2, he was able to fight stronger enemies, but it had a significant effect on his health. This was in fact pointed out by one of his biggest enemies Rob Lucci. Since Luffy has been using this technique and putting a tremendous amount of pressure on his body.

Concerning this, a theory has surfaced online that predicts that Luffy has put enough pressure on his body that he might not have much time to live. Even if he achieves his dream of becoming the King of the Pirates, he might not live long enough to enjoy the title. But as One Piece fans know, Luffy would rather die as a free man than live as the World’s Government’s slave.

Theory Predicts How Luffy Only Has A Few Years To Live

According to a theory by Tevin Davis on Quora, in his journey to become the King of the Pirates, Luffy has exerted enough pressure on himself to fight his enemies that he might not have much time left. This all started when Luffy gained two new skills Gear 2 and Gear 3 during the Water 7/Enies Lobby arc.

Gear 2, which enables him to boost the force and speed of his attacks by pumping more blood to his heart via his rubber body, and Gear 3, which involves biting into his palm to inflate various body parts with air. However, there is a price for these power-ups that Luffy has been paying. Luffy’s body is gradually being damaged by them.

Later, Luffy becomes poisoned during the Impel Down arc, but Emporio Ivankov saves him. For the sake of saving Luffy, Ivankov sacrificed decades of his life by using his hormone-manipulating skills to increase the strength of his immune system. Since then, many more instances have happened that have led to Luffy risking his life even more using these techniques, thus putting more emphasis on the fact that he might not live long enough.

Since Luffy has found a new Gear technique, he tends to use it much more than the previous one. However, it still has an impact on his body, especially his heart. For example, the Gear 5 technique activates the Drums of Liberation, which might be good for a power-up but could very well hurt his heart. This is because an uneven heartbeat can cause a multitude of problems with the blood flow of the body.

If even Gear 5 is affecting his body then almost all of his techniques are causing problems for him and might cut his life expectancy to half. This is also evident from the fact that Luffy’s stamina is significantly decreased as seen by his ability to control Gear 5. It has a huge strain on his body and Luffy almost drains out of all energy in his body within minutes of using it.

However, as Luffy’s fans know, the Captain of the Straw Hat Pirates does not care about such trivial matters. His freedom matters to him the most which is the sole reason why he wants to become the King of the Pirates. Therefore Luffy would much rather die while fighting his enemies and the world government as a free man than become their slave.
