Elden Ring has several villainous characters with their own ambitions and agendas, but none of them might be the true villains in the game after all, as even game director Hidetaka Miyazaki thinks the players themselves may actually be the biggest villains.

Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki recently sat for an exclusive interview with Famitsu where he talked about some details of the upcoming DLC Shadow of the Erdtree. He was asked about the theme that he is trying to express in Shadow of the Erdtree among other things DLC.

Miyazaki said that it is hard to answer as he would not be able to properly explain it, and added that he hopes players find it out themselves. He was then asked if the DLC would also have the same “heroic tale” that was told in Elden Ring‘s main story.

Miyazaki replied that the heroic tale theme remains unchanged in the DLC and mentioned Messmer in the key art of the DLC as an example, saying “he is another hero.” He further added that the throne on which Messmer is shown sitting is the same one as shown during the fight with Morgott the Omen King in the game.

This implies that players could be the main villains in the game, as Messmer is a heroic character and could be protecting a great rune, and players will probably fight him to get the rune. Moreover, the players have killed countless characters who came in their way of progressing, putting their ambitions first.

The Tarnished May Be the Biggest Villain in Elden Ring

The player may be the biggest villain in the game.
The player may be the biggest villain in the game.

Players have slaughtered Chanting Winged Dame, who sing about their tragic past; Ancestral Spirits, who just worship and try to protect their sanctuary; and several others. The players even burn the Erdtree to beat the game and become Elden Lord, which is the source of all life.

There are six endings in the game, and players can either fix the world or burn it down to ashes in any of them. The Age of Fracture ending is the standard ending where players fix the Elden Ring, but they have already killed many in the process. The Age of Duskborn brings back the old order of the Lands Between by restoring the principle of death.

The Age of Stars ending sees Ranni the Witch become a god and The Tarnished become the Elden Lord, but that still makes no difference. Regardless of the ending, the players have done a lot worse than they have done good for the Lands Between.
