Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree finally received a gameplay trailer, a year after it was first announced, and is all set to release on June 21, 2024. The expansion will take players to a new region called Land of Shadows, separate from The Lands Between, and follow in the footsteps of Miquella.
The massive expansion will bring new weapons, armor, and bosses for players to go against. One of the bosses in the upcoming expansion is Messmer the Impaler, who is supposedly the ultimate boss. Elden Ring fans are now discussing Messmer the Impaler, and some think that they may have already fought him.
Fans Think They’ve Already Fought Elden Ring DLC’s Messmer
Messmer the Impaler is the main figure in the DLC, and a fan took to the Elden Ring community subreddit and said that the expansion has made them realize that Messmer the Impaler is planning something in the Land of Shadow, and it might be so big that it could “shake the lands between to their core.”
The fan further explained that if a player takes any one of the four Elden Lord endings before the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, Messmer might “inevitably” attack their Elden Lord after the events in the base game. They added that the players would be “completely unprepared” for Messmer’s attack, as they had no idea that he existed in the first place.
The fan said that it is possible that Messmer defeated the player’s Elden Lord and the Erdtree was destroyed after previous playthroughs, and it does sound like a possibility. Moreover, Hidetaka Miyazaki has said that Messmer is a “key figure” in the DLC, and the expansion is inspired by the original lore of the game created by George R.R. Martin, so Messmer might have been somewhere in The Lands Between.
Messmer Might Be Connected to Other Characters in Elden Ring
Elden Ring fans have been speculating all sorts of things about Messmer the Impaler and have several theories, with fans saying that he has connections to the characters of the base game. Some think that he is a demigod and might be the son of Queen Marika and Radagon, which makes him the brother of Miquella and Malenia.
Director Miyazaki has also revealed that Queen Marika is from the Land of Shadows and Miquella is there to find his mother, and since Queen Marika has lived there, it is possible that he could have been born there at that time. Players have also said that some items in the main game connect Messmer to Marika.
Players have said that the Nascent Butterfly, Aeonian Butterfly, and Smoldering Butterfly that players collect to craft things are related to Marika’s children, and the Smoldering Butterfly represents Messmer the Impaler. It’s just a theory as of now, and it’s hard to say if it’s true or not, but players will find out everything in just a few months.
