Back when the era of open-world FPS was just kicking off during the early-to-mid-2000s, Ubisoft’s Far Cry had a huge role to play. The game series’ exotic locations and FPS gameplay smashed records at launch, announcing to the world that publisher and developer Ubisoft had arrived in the FPS space.
To date, the game series has had six mainline titles apart from multiple spin-offs over the span of two decades. For a long time now, Far Cry has set the bar high for AAA open-world action titles.
Far Cry 2 is the inspiration behind Far Cry 7
According to a report from Insider Gaming, Far Cry 7 will feature a big change in terms of the inclusion of an in-game timer. This kind of shift in structure would mark the game’s venture in a drastically different direction. The series’ previous games were more free-form and bombastic, while the new one is said to lean more into some of Far Cry 2‘s realism and designs.
This could possibly mean that Ubisoft is also considering incorporating other former features into the upcoming title. This could include Far Cry 2‘s weapon or item behavior, instead of Far Cry 6‘s backpack abilities. Besides, it is also possible that Far Cry 7 will have warring groups of players that can interact with this rumored timer, in case it draws too much inspiration from Far Cry 2.
Additionally, it has also been reported that Far Cry 7 could potentially feature an entire cult of foes on a tropical island. This indicates somewhat at Far Cry 3‘s setting mixed with Far Cry 5‘s setup.
Developer Ubisoft could also be considering bouncing back to some design inspiration behind Far Cry 2 in confluence with some twists. If this is exactly what Ubisoft is aiming at, it could be a little risky in terms of potentially restricting some prior aspects.
Nonetheless, with Far Cry 7, the franchise could possibly flourish from the status of being a middle-of-the-road title. It could offer a powerful seventh installment taking the best features from Far Cry 2 and adding fresh surprises.
When is Far Cry 7 releasing?
Notably, there has been no official word from Ubisoft or the makers regarding Far Cry 7. However, the rumor mill has been spinning giving out details that the title is under development. There have also been a considerable number of leaks over the past year building the speculations around the game.
Nonetheless, it has been confirmed that Drew Holmes, Far Cry 5 narrative designer and lead writer is heading the upcoming game as a director. Besides, it is rumored to be in the works at Ubisoft Montreal studio. Rumor also has it that it will be set on a fictitious tropical island known as Kimsan, which is located in the “Yellow Sea next to Korea,” and that it will be titled Far Cry: Rise.
In the past, there has been a steady two-year gap between Far Cry 3 and 5, which then became three years between 5 and 6. There are some reports that claim the next Far Cry won’t come out till Spring 2025. Thus, this will mark the longest gap between the two installments.
