Kevin Conroy’s voice has forever been imbued into that of Batman’s. One’s name cannot exist without the other. It is that both their legacies coexist in a way that becomes inseparable. With his final act only moments away from being released, there is a lot of anticipation, hope, and sheer love for the late actor.

Out of the many projects in which he has portrayed the Caped Crusader, it was Batman: The Animated Series that started it all. The actor had adorned the character’s emotions perfectly across movies, games, animated shows, and even an unfortunate live-action appearance for the Crisis on Infinite Earths arc in the Arrowverse. However, none of that was compatible with what he contributed to the original series.

Batman: The Animated Series Saw an Untimely End

Batman: The Animated Series was like a rabbit hole of ideas, endless and full of creativity. Bruce Timm’s creations have always been supported and deeply appreciated; with this series being a starting point for it all. Having a run for four seasons, there were both moments that made fans laugh and those that made them emotional.

“They didn’t stop making the shows because the audience wasn’t there or the actors weren’t there, they stopped, really, because the creators ran out of ideas for stories. And they didn’t want to compromise on the quality of what they had and start creating kind of silly stories.”

Understanding how attached a person could become to those moments and episodes, the series is still regarded as one of the best. However, its untimely end came for a very specific reason. According to Kevin Conroy, during the MCM Comic Con London as per Comic Book, there was a time for things to end. Nothing can stretch for too long, else it would just be milking the cow beyond capability.

He had confirmed that the ending had nothing to do with the audience. Nor were the actors a part of the reasoning.

Kevin Conroy Saw New Ideas Being Formed

Kevin Conroy then talked about how the showrunners and scriptwriters were at a dead end and a crossroads at the same time. While on one hand, they had a fair share of ideas to go forward with, none of them would have kept Batman: The Animated Series in the flow it needed.

“So they go, ‘Look, we gotta go in a whole new different direction.’ So then they went to Batman and Robin, they brought in Robin, that was the next series. Then they went into Batman Beyond, you know, recruiting a young guy. And then it was the Justice League. They were always looking at different ways to re-imagine the characters, just so they can get new storylines. A lot of it had to do with trying to come up with stories that weren’t becoming ridiculous.”

Soon after, they came up with even more incredible ideas with projects independent of the series. This gave them the liberty to explore all the corners they couldn’t at first. In this manner, Conroy too was able to establish himself as Batman for more than one project.

At the end of the day, despite an ending no one was ready for, Conroy was able to expand his voice talent and the writers were able to explore uncharted territories.
