Matt Rife, who gained recognition for his social media presence and the comedy special Natural Selection, has delayed some of his upcoming performances due to an unexpected medical issue. The comedian is currently on his ProbleMATTic World Tour with consistently sold-out venues.
He has earlier opened up about the toll his work has taken on his health, citing limited sleep after which he has now canceled sold-out shows that were scheduled to take place at the Indiana University Auditorium.
Matt Rife Cancels Shows Due to Unexpected Medical Emergency
Matt Rife has called off the sold-out performances from his ProbleMATTic World Tour, which were slated to take place at the Indiana University Auditorium on May 29. The news was revealed by the IU Auditorium, who shared on Instagram that the show is being canceled due to an unexpected medical emergency.
“MATT RIFE CANCELLED,” the post reads, as it further states, “Tonight’s Matt Rife shows (including the 10 p.m. performance) have been canceled due to an unexpected medical emergency.” The comedian also shared his apologies for the cancelation on his Instagram story, stating,
I’m so f**king sorry, but due to a last minute medical emergency I have to reschedule our shows tonight (again) — I’ve been doing 40+ shows a month for a year and a half and never had to do something like this. I’m so so sorry. I hope you understand and I love you so much.
IU Auditorium has shared that tickets will be refunded in full within 30 days. While he is set to kick off a four-day run at the Chicago Theatre on May 30, which is also sold out, it remains uncertain whether those shows will proceed as scheduled.
Matt Rife Opened Up About the Toll of Working Prior to Medical Emergency
Before the cancellation of his show, Rife had candidly discussed the toll of constant work. Taking on X (Twitter), the comedian revealed a lack of proper sleep, only about 14 hours per week, as he shared that it has made him feel extremely tired and rundown.
“Sometimes I feel 98 years old and then I remember I sleep maybe 14 hours a week if I’m lucky so I am quite literally a corpse,” he said in a tweet shared earlier this week. Despite this admission, reactions to the show’s cancellation have been mixed, with some expressing concern for Rife, and others sharing their disappointment over the abrupt change of plans.
Rife rose to fame in recent years for his engaging presence on social media. He has since made his Netflix debut with the comedy special Natural Selection. The show received success as one of the most viewed specials on the streaming platform.
However, the comedian also faced backlash for his jokes about domestic violence. Rife is currently involved in developing a workplace sitcom for the streaming giant and has secured a deal for two more specials with the streaming service, including its first-ever full-length crowd work special.
