The recent review of the Early Access FPS, Selaco, by Yahtzee Croshaw on his popular web series Fully Ramblomatic has ignited some controversy. While Croshaw, known for his wit and critical eye, offered a mixed bag of observations, it appears a Selaco developer hasn’t taken the feedback well.

One of the main developers of the game took to Twitter to tear down his review. He states that the review is poorly researched, and misses the point of the game.

Croshaw’s review of the game highlighted several aspects of the game. He praised the game’s fast-paced action and the potential of its world-building through environmental storytelling. However, he also criticized the repetitive enemy design, lack of a clear narrative, and some technical issues.

The developer behind Selaco, seemingly aware of the review’s existence, took to social media to express their displeasure. In a series of now-deleted tweets, the developer called Croshaw’s review unfair and accused him of not understanding the Early Access development. They further claimed to have sent Croshaw a review code, knowing of his critical style but didn’t expect such an outcome.

The developer’s outburst backfired a bit. Fans and viewers of the show were quick to defend Croshaw, pointing out that his reviews are known for their blunt honesty and that Early Access titles are inherently subject to criticism.

While the developer’s reaction is understandable as any criticism stings, it ultimately paints a negative picture for the Selaco team. Early Access thrives on open communication and feedback. Taking constructive criticism on board, even if delivered harshly, is crucial for improvement.

While a lot of people have criticized the developer’s unprofessional response, some have also criticized the original review for containing some tone-deaf comments, such as the inclusion of “get a real job” levied towards the developers of the game.

Second Wind, the team behind the Fully Ramblomatic series, tweeted the review, but the responses to it have been extremely unfavorable. The majority of the top replies highlight that the review was in rather poor taste. They accuse Croshaw of intentionally being more negative about the game to get more clicks and traction.

The controversy surrounding the review has garnered Selaco some unintended attention. Whether this translates to increased interest or fuels further negativity remains to be seen. The developer did delete his original reply and acknowledged his mistake, using this as a learning opportunity.

It’s hard to say who’s right and who’s wrong in this situation. While the reviews usually lean towards satire, they bring up some good points and are well-written, but this might not be the same with Selaco’s review. It is understandable for a developer to get frustrated at a poor review, but there are better ways to communicate that point.

However, the developer did delete the tweets and admitted his mistake, stating that he had a lot to learn. Have you checked out Selaco’s early access period yet? Let us know in the comments below.
