Kevin Costner is the heart and soul of Yellowstone, but unfortunately, it seems that his time on the show has finally come to an end. Costner was said to have left the show for good when the issues regarding schedule conflicts and salary issues arose last year (see People). Yet, fans still had some hope that he might return despite Costner stating how he had taken a beating from those f**king guys (via Deadline).
Just days ago, the actor revealed he would be willing to return under the right circumstances (via Today.com). However, in a recent video posted on his Instagram, Costner finally cleared the air regarding his return to Yellowstone and stated,
I just want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on Horizon and doing all the things that that’s required. Thinking about Yellowstone, that beloved series that I love, that I know you love, I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue, season five or into the future.
Thus, the 69-year-old actor announced his departure from the show and went on to express his gratitude towards the show, describing it as something that changed me. As fans mourn the loss of the actor, several of them compared his exit to Steve Carell’s exit from The Office.

Steve Carell‘s character in The Office is still one of the most beloved TV characters of all time. Michael Scott not only made people laugh but was foundational for the series’ success. However, he suddenly left the show in season 7 of the show, to give other characters a chance to glow (via Office Ladies Podcast). Although his departure was sudden, it was well executed, giving him a befitting end.
While the series inevitably fell from then on, failing to attract viewers with new and old characters, Carell’s exit was nonetheless impactful. On the other hand, Kevin Costner’s sudden departure from Yellowstone not only leaves his character arc incomplete but is also a massive loss for the show. As his video went viral, several fans on Reddit remarked how Costner’s loss was worse than Carell’s exit,

While some compared Costner’s exit to The Office, others compare it to Kevin Spacey’s departure from House of Cards due to his ‘troubles’. Despite his troubles, Spacey’s exit from his hit Netflix show defiantly impacted the series negatively, and fans anticipate the same will happen with Yellowstone.
Kevin Costner’s portrayal of John Dutton will be deeply missed by the fans, and his absence will undoubtedly leave a void in the series, but this is the way of the world as dynamic as the entertainment industry!
Yellowstone is streaming on Peacock.
