Ryan Coogler’s success with Creed and Black Panther has made the director the perfect fit to helm Universal’s upcoming adaption of A Vicious Circle, a graphic novel by Netflix’s Power Play scribe, Mattson Tomlin. Described as ‘John Wick meets Looper‘ by The Hollywood Reporter, the graphic novel is a true science fiction tour-de-force, with a unique setting drawn breathtakingly in multiple art styles by comic artist Lee Bermejo.

The premise of the graphic novel is about an epic duel between two assassins, each with the same strange affliction: every time they are responsible for someone’s death, they slip through time, ending up in the past or the present, be it 22nd Century Tokyo, or the Cretaceous Period. The adaptation will be a movie, with Boom! Studios execs and Coogler’s own Proximity Media set to produce.

With over 100,000 copies sold worldwide since it was first published in 2022, A Vicious Circle is one of Boom! Studios’ most lucrative works, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The graphic novel will be the second work that Tomlin will be adapting for the company, given that he is also working on the BRZRKR script, which is co-created by Keanu Reeves, for Netflix. The graphic novel follows an immortal warrior fighting battles through time, which was funded on Kickstarter.
Mattson Tomlin has his fingers in quite a few projects, being attached to Aegon’s Conquest, a prequel to the House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, focusing on Aegon I Targaryen and his conquest of Westeros, uniting the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule, along with co-writing The Batman Part II. The writer was also the scribe behind Terminator Zero, which will be making its debut on Netflix on August 29th, 2024.

Ryan Coogler‘s Proximity Media will be heading the production of The Vicious Circle, with a few high-profile releases lined up on its own. The production house is currently deep into post-production with the Ironheart miniseries, set in the MCU for Disney+.
Apart from this, the production house is also working on the supernatural, Michael B. Jordan starer, vampire movie, which is being helmed by Coogler as well. Along with this, Deadline reported the production house will also be adapting California Bear by Duane Swierczynski, which follows vigilantes taking justice into their own hands, only to find themselves embroiled in one of the city’s most chilling murder cases.
