While the two actors shared great chemistry on screen, Hannigan revealed that it was tough work getting intimate with Segel on set owing to one particular habit that she could not tolerate.

If Marshall and Lily from How I Met Your Mother became one of the most popular couples on television, the credit goes to Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan, who played these characters so relatably. Over the seasons, their charming and hilarious chemistry was amply evident as both stars shared an organic collaboration on camera which also saw them becoming good friends on set as well.
Expectedly, playing a couple who eventually get married, meant that the celebrities were involved in many romantic and intimate scenes in the show. But this proved to be a tough proposition for Hannigan especially when it came to kissing Segel on camera, owing to the fact that he was a smoker.
In an interview with Digital Spy, the American Pie actor minced no words when she described the feeling she had while kissing the Bad Teacher actor each time for a scene, despite him making an attempt to ease the situation.
I cannot stand cigarette smoke. It’s like kissing an ashtray and he’s trying to be polite by having gum or mints, but it doesn’t help.
Hannigan, who was determined to find a solution to Segel’s habit, revealed that she gave him an ultimatum for him to stop smoking during the filming of the series.
So we did this bet where he would owe me $10 every time he had a cigarette. After the first day, he owed me $200.
While it is unclear if the actor actually got her co-star to pay her this money, it so happened that Segel decided to quit smoking overnight and kept away from the habit for a year before falling back into it again later.

Unlike films where collaborations between actors last only during the filming period, television shows give celebrities an opportunity to not only grow professionally on set, but also help them form close personal friendships with their cast members. This was the case for How I Met Your Mother stars Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan, who play the endearing couple Marshall and Lily on the show.
Over 9 seasons, their on-screen chemistry translated into a lovely friendship which Segel was extremely grateful for. In an appearance on The Talk, The Muppets actor gushed about his co-star and revealed how she had shaped his life in more ways than one.
Aly taught me a lot about how to be a man, I gotta say. I was 25 when I took [on] the show, and I think we’ve all been through a lot personally. Aly and I have a lot of scenes together, and we spend a lot of time together, and she’s always been there to listen to me and to give me advice. [She] saw me through hard times and good times.
Segel also revealed that Hannigan gave him a lot of insight on the kind of person he wanted to be, and this in turn, went a long way into developing his image as an actor on and off camera.
