The 75-year-old George R. R. Martin did wonders of wonders when he brought the Game of Thrones saga out in the wild in the late 1990s. Since then, he has continued multiple other books fans just can’t get over. However, he has also been under major criticism from fans because of his unfinished books that have been work-in-progress for a bit too long.

But while Martin seems to be taking an eerily long time to bring the best content to his fans through his books, at the same time, he looks like he has the time to keep up closely with other live-action works, like the House of the Dragon TV series. And fans like Stephen Colbert are not okay with it, considering how he totally flipped out when Martin pointed out a mistake in the HotD saga.

Although George R. R. Martin has ostensibly been trying to keep up, he has been brutally failing, especially with the forthcoming sixth installment, The Winds of Winter, in the A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novel series. This is because the book has long been overdue for almost a decade since fans originally expected to receive it by somewhere roughly around the 2015-16 mark.

However, while fans patiently wait for him to finally deliver the epic high fantasy piece, the author seems to have the time for other stuff. For instance, his recent review of the House of the Dragon television series, where he pointed out a mistake in it, proves that he actually had the time to keep up with the series but not finish his long-due book. And fans aren’t okay with this.

This is evident from the recent rant comedian cum writer Stephen Colbert held on his hit The Late Show with Stephen Colbert about the same. Explaining why Martin “isn’t happy” with HotD, he frustratingly said:

See, he took to his blog recently to express his disappointment with the House Targaryen emblem. Because its three-headed dragon has four legs instead of his preferred two-legged depiction.

This was followed by him sharing a snippet of the exact message the 75-year-old author left on his blog post. According to it, Martin wrote (via @colbertlateshow on Instagram):

Four-legged dragons exist only in heraldry. No animal that has ever lived on Earth has six limbs. Birds have two legs and two wings, bats the same, ditto pteranodons and other flying dinosaurs, etc.

While this was a genuinely pointed criticism of the series that holds a fine 89% approval score from the critics at Rotten Tomatoes, Colbert isn’t okay with it, especially when Martin should instead be busy working on his book. As the talk show host mockingly responded to the author’s criticism:

Got it, George. And I bet you’ll totally nail the correct number of dragon legs in The Winds of Winter… if you ever finish writing it! Okay? Less of this [makes talking hand movement]. More of this [makes typing hand movement]! It’s all made up!

Hilariously enough, the 60-year-old Colbert even sarcastically captioned this very post as:

#Meanwhile… When it comes to Dragon anatomy, George R.R. Martin doesn’t really have a leg to stand on.

Though this criticism and backlash is indeed a bit too brutal, it is also understandable because fans have quite literally been waiting for a bit too long for Martin’s thoughts for The Winds of Winter to finally materialize. That said, fans didn’t hesitate to add some humorously witty responses of their own to Martin’s criticism of HotD.

Fans React to George R. R. Martin Pointing Out Mistakes in HotD

Taking to the comment section of the Instagram post, fans seem to be having the time of their lives as they further emphasize and justify Colbert’s frustration with Martin pointing out mistakes in HotD and his unfinished forthcoming book through their own hilariously sarcastic responses. Here’s what some of the top comments say:

“finish the book or more legs would be added” ~ @navyauvan

“Less talky, more typy!” ~ @optimum3d

“Man gonna complain about dragon legs when he let D&D end Game of Thrones that way?” ~ @alexander__snow

“He’s pissed about the emblem and not the fact that HBO producers made Bran king?” ~ @gescol

“Argues about the number of legs completely ignoring the three heads. What animal on earth breathes fire and has three heads, George?” ~ @yazan_96a

“Did man fully forget about insects, arachnids, and other many legged bug buggies?” ~ @sofishtication_

Well, it’s not like fans are wrong with their scathingly critical reactions as well. While we do believe that he wants to bring about a work full of utmost spectacularity through this upcoming sixth installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, and is, thus, taking so long, we also feel the need to emphasize that the wait has indeed been incredibly long enough.

That said, perhaps Martin should take Colbert’s advice and try sticking with completing and finally delivering his book before jumping on his forum to criticize other works.
