The necessary evil of the One Piece world, the Devil Fruits, has reached a point in the narrative where they can not only allow their users to unleash new powers but also let them awaken these powers, taking them to a whole different level. However, the ability to awaken these Devil Fruit powers is not as easy as it sounds.

The strongest creature in the One Piece world, Kaido, during his battle against Luffy in Wano, explained the process of awakening one’s Devil Fruit. In order to do that, the user needs to align their body and their mind with their Devil Fruit’s strength. So far, only the Paramecia and the Zoan Devil Fruit users have awakened their abilities.

The only type of Devil Fruit that is left to witness an awakening is the Logia type. The Logia Devil Fruits are extremely rare, and the most dangerous among them is the Dark-Dark Fruit, which belongs to the main villain of One Piece, Blackbeard. There is a theory that explains how Blackbeard’s Devil Fruit awakening might result in his defeat.

Logia Devil Fruit Awakening in One Piece

According to a theory posted by u/Kioga101 on Reddit, there is a big chance that Logia Devil Fruits might never experience an awakening in One Piece. This is because their abilities use elements from nature, and the rules of awakening do not align with natural elements at all, thus making it impossible for them to awaken.

The awakening of Devil Fruit works in two ways. For Paramecia, the awakening can help the user change their surroundings and use them according to their Devil Fruit abilities. In the case of Zoan, the awakening grants them additional powers along with heightened strength, speed, etc. It depends on the nature of the Devil Fruit and what kind of awakening its user will get.

But in the case of Logia Devil Fruit, awakening is impossible because there is no possible way for the user to align their mind and body with a natural element. Even if they somehow manage to do this, it might completely change them into their natural element, which could cause them to self-destruct.

Blackbeard’s Awakening Might Be His End

Eiichiro Oda is a narrative genius. Either the mangaka has already planned how he is going to change the concept of awakening for the Logia Devil Fruit or he is never going to introduce the concept for their nature. And if the concept of the theory is correct, he might even use it to point out the weaknesses of Logia Devil Fruit users like Blackbeard and Akainu.

Thus, there is a good chance that the Devil Fruit powers upon which Blackbeard prides so much might result in his defeat in One Piece.

Knowing Blackbeard, he is going to somehow figure out the awakening of his Dark-Dark Fruit. This would be his stupidest move, as aligning the body and mind with darkness would kill him.

Although this could be the biggest weakness for Blackbeard, Oda most likely will not explore this option, as it would be a very bland conclusion for one of the most terrifying villains in the history of One Piece.
