Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader, introduced the world to a different interpretation of Batman. Instead of doing an origin story again, the film majorly focused on the corruption and ugliness of a crime-ridden Gotham City and the elements that play into it. Batman got to square off against adversaries like Carmine Falcone and the Penguin.
Following the success of the film, Reeves started thinking about various spin-off shows that would further explore the nitty-gritty of Gotham City. In addition to the upcoming Penguin series, shows about Gotham PD and Arkham Asylum were earlier in development, but have now been cancelled. With the new revelation that he is developing a new show, fans have one villain in mind for it.
Fans Want A Gritty TV Series Focused on Bane in the Matt Reeves’ Bat-Verse
The Batman introduced some fascinating characters and an intriguing world of Gotham City where many stories can be told about it. Director Matt Reeves has some big plans for his Bat-Verse led by Robert Pattinson, and the upcoming Penguin series is the next chapter in his vision of his new world. The director is planning an expansive world in addition to the main film’s sequel.
Two shows were in development earlier but it was announced that they were no longer in development. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly where they talked about The Penguin, Reeves revealed that he is exploring ideas for a new TV show. The director did not specifically reveal the focal point of the new series but fans have their own desires for it.
On X, fans expressed their desire to see a series based on a list of Batman’s rogues gallery. An interesting one included an origin story based on Bane who eventually sets his eyes on Gotham by the end. Here are some of the reactions,
Bane origin story would go hard. Starting from his early years in Santa Prisca prison. Spin-off ends with him setting his sights on Gotham City

As long as it can keep its dark aesthetic with good storyline that doesn’t take away it will be amazing

Catwoman, after Robin debut should be considered. Even a Joker series would be cool

Hush would be very interesting

It would be cool if they stuck with villian spin offs, would give a different feel to the univser If it was very villain focused

I would personally love to see a League of Shadows live action series that leads up to Bruce Wayne showing up. How Ra's Al Ghul came to power, his family, and the whole backstory there. The Lazarus Pit. Man that would be dope.

Bane, who is originally a Cuban-born Christian in the comics, was portrayed by an English movie star, Tom Hardy, in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. If they were to do a show on him or an introduction in the movies, fans would want a more comic-accurate interpretation of the character. It remains to be seen if Reeves will integrate Bane into his Batverse.
The Penguin Series Will Serve As A Bridge Between The Batman and Its Upcoming Sequel
After The Batman, Matt Reeves is back with The Penguin series led by Colin Farrell. The series will follow Oz Cobblepot as he tries to regain control of Gotham City after the fall of his boss Carmine Falcone. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Lauren LeFranc compared the series to Scarface in terms of its ‘rise to power’ story of the iconic Batman supervillain.
LeFranc further teased that the series will serve as a narrative bridge between The Batman and the sequel with certain elements and plot points. The showrunner said,
It’s a Scarface story. It’s a rise-to-power story of Oz before he really makes it to the top. He’s very smart and very methodical, but he’s also extremely impulsive. You can’t predict what he’s going to do. We are the bridge between the two films. We’re going almost directly into the second film Matt has planned.
The Penguin will star Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, Scott Cohen, and many others alongside Farrell.
The highly anticipated series will premiere on Max on September 19, 2024.
