Gears of War: E-Day stands as a prequel set 14 years before the events of the original game, depicting the events of Emergence Day from the perspective of the franchise’s iconic characters, Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago.
By returning the series’ focus to the Locusts and fan-favorite characters, it’s clear The Coalition is taking the series back to its roots. However, the game must bring this one removed feature from Gears of War Ultimate Edition to truly bring back the franchise to its glory days.
Gears of War: E-Day Must Bring Hammer of Dawn in the Campaign Mode
Since Gears of War Ultimate Edition is a remaster, it brings the same grand vision of the original games, and it still looks and feels excellent. The game also brought back some of the most iconic weapons, including the Hammer of Dawn.
Stolen from Union of Independent Republics scientists and later developed by Adam Fenix, the Hammer of Dawn is an Imulsion-powered orbital satellite that can rain devastating particle beams from above. However, the developers changed the weapon in the game’s Ultimate Edition in a disappointing way.

In the original games, Hammer of Dawn could be used by players to team kill each other. While it was frustrating for some players, this aspect of the weapon added to the joy of the game for many. With the release of Ultimate Edition, many players thought the developers would reintroduce the Hammer of Dawn again in all its glory.
Unfortunately, in Gears of War Ultimate Edition coop mode, the weapon was changed quite dramatically, and its team-killing mechanic was abandoned entirely. It’s a shame to see such an old-school mechanic getting neglected, but its reintroduction in the upcoming E-Day could be what the franchise desperately needs.
When is Gears of War: E-Day Coming Out?
For several years, Gears of War was one of the best shooter series for Xbox, right alongside the Halo franchise. The original trilogy gained widespread popularity before The Coalition took over the iconic series with Gears of War 5. Since then, fans have waited for another entry into the franchise, and we finally have E-Day coming.
Unfortunately, The Coalition still hasn’t provided details on the Gears of War: E-Day release date yet. With 2024 already in its second half, we’re likely going to witness the game hit the shelves in either 2025 or early 2026.
The game will be available to experience on Xbox Series S/X and PC. Currently, it’s still unknown whether the title will be playable on the last generation Xbox, but this will likely be exclusive to the current generation’s systems only.
With that said, is there anything else The Coalition needs to bring to Gears of War: E-Day? Let us know in the comments.
