Monica’s arc also saw her having quite a few serious relationships before her love story with Chandler blossomed. One of her love interests included Jon Favreau’s Pete Becker. But some fans of the show did not quite agree with how their story was developed and eventually culminated. They believed that the characters’ break-up and the reasons behind it were not convincing at all.

This Love Story In FRIENDS Did Not Impress Fans With Its Execution

As the obsessive perfectionist among the group of buddies in FRIENDS, Courteney Cox excelled as Monica Geller in the hit sitcom. One of the traits that symbolized her character was the various relationships she got into before ultimately realizing that Chandler was the one for her. Her love story with the much older Dr. Richard Burke played by Tom Selleck was one that left her heartbroken.

Monica also dated software genius and multi-millionaire Pete Becker, played by Jon Favreau in the show. He showers her with luxurious treats and woos her with surprises, including taking her on a date to Rome. While Monica is initially convinced that she is not attracted to him, she later has a change of heart and believes that he could be the one.

In an ironic twist though, the characters break up as Pete’s obsession with becoming the Ultimate Fighting Champion comes in the way. With Monica unable to witness him getting beaten black and blue and the millionaire refusing to give up his passion, the relationship ends.

Fans though, found this to be a rather tame and unconvincing end to their story. In a discussion on Reddit about the weirdest plot in the series, a netizen brought up the Pete-Monica story as being one that did not add up, especially regarding Favreau’s character’s decision.

Cox who played Monica Geller in the show, revealed how the series taught her some valuable lessons on respecting and valuing the close connection between like-minded people. She elaborated on this in an interview with Variety.

Friends taught me the importance of camaraderie and really sticking together. These friendships were at the most important time in my life, and we went through so many things together. And it just taught me about being there for each other — I know, that’s the song: ‘I’ll be there for you.’ But it’s true.

More importantly, the bond between the cast was so strong that there was no room for any sort of unhealthy competition or jealousy among them. Cox believed that this unconditional support that each actor gave the other, was a defining factor that helped their on-screen camaraderie work so seamlessly.
