Only a few sitcoms have had a bigger impact on popular culture than FRIENDS. The outpouring of grief from fans worldwide following Matthew Perry’s demise last month further underlined how important a place the characters of FRIENDS hold in the hearts of millions of fans.
As soon as the final episode of the show premiered in 2004, their fans started talking about prospects of another take, in one way or another. As times passed and their favorite stars aged, the only reunion FRIENDS fans got was a documentary titled Friends: The Reunion. In recent years, suggestions for a reboot have also been floated. In that regard, Courteney Cox pitched in an interesting casting choice in Timothée Chalamet.
Courteney Cox Names the FRIENDS Character That Timothée Chalamet Should Portray
FRIENDS revolved around the lives of six reckless adults living in Manhattan for 10 seasons. After the premiere of the show in 1994, the main cast members, including Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox, rose to stardom overnight.
The show ended in 2004 after all the friends but Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) found their love of life. Accordingly, all six stars moved on to pursue different ventures. However, in the two decades since then, questions concerning their reunion or the show’s reboot never left their trail.
In 2020, Cox, who played Monica Geller, was asked about the idea of a FRIENDS reboot once again. This time, during an appearance on Kevin Nealon’s YouTube series Hiking with Kevin. When the host brought up the suggestion of a reboot, the actress swiftly replied, “Well, Timothée Chalamet can be Joey.” The idea came before Timothée Chalamet had established himself as a top actor with his work in Dune.
Apart from his immense acting talent, Chalamet is viewed as one of the most good-looking actors in Hollywood. As such, this is a reasonable shout from Cox, as LeBlanc’s character was the Ladies’ man in the sitcom thanks to his charming appearance.
Meanwhile, Nealon interestingly suggested Wolf of Wall Street actor Jonah Hill as David Schwimmer’s Ross.
Why Courteney Cox Snubbed the Opportunity to Play Jennifer Aniston’s Character
Thanks to the way Aniston, Cox, Perry, LeBlanc, Schwimmer, and Lisa Kudrow left their marks on their characters, it’s hard to imagine any other individual taking on the roles. From Perry’s sarcasm to LeBlanc’s flirty persona, all these actors made the show special by bringing something different (and likable) to the table. The casting of FRIENDS was absolutely perfect.
Having said that, the producers of the sitcom initially wanted Cox to portray Rachel Green. But the actress turned that part and picked Monica, who takes Rachel into her home, kick-starting the iconic friendship between the six friends.
The 59-year-old was more drawn to Monica, who is an energetic, competitive, and neat freak. During an appearance on Off Camera with Sam Jones podcast, Cox said she’s very similar to her character. She noted that she’s not as clean as Monica, but is still neat.
