It brought so many tears to the eyes, but if anyone wants a heavier, more realistic drama then fans should check out another Gosling film with Michelle Williams: Blue Valentine (2010). This one truly tugs at the heartstrings.

Ryan Gosling Reveals Brutal Preparation For Blue Valentine

In an interview with Fresh Air via NPR, actor Ryan Gosling revealed what he and costar Michelle Williams had to go through to prepare for their roles in Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine.

During the month, we tried to dismantle this thing that we had been building. [Originally,] we all worked really hard to create this love story portion, when they’re falling in love. We wanted it to feel genuine and real and true. And we spent all of this time building it up, and then we had to tear it down.

The effort the actors put into their roles is beyond insane. Gosling and Williams portrayed a married couple struggling to rekindle their relationship. To make it more convincing, they also had to take their characters’ wedding photos and set them on fire.

Gosling shared they even celebrated fake Christmas and took their characters’ daughter to the park “whatever we could do to create real memories, so when it came time to shoot the [last] part of the film, we were drawing on real memories.” They even lived in one house for a month.

The Barbie actor admitted it was the first movie he felt like he wasn’t filming at all. He noted how in most projects, actors try to forget they are making film productions because there’s always the sight of trailers, lights, and cameras. “With this, you’re trying to remember that it is a movie, because it’s so easy to get lost in it,” he added.

Blue Valentine is not a typical love story – it shows how relationships are built and how they slowly crumble to pieces once the cracks in marriage start forming.
