Ryan Gosling is now cautious with the movie roles he takes as he wants the best not only for his career but for his family as well. From bad boy roles, he is now shifting to fun and lighthearted films that even his kids can enjoy.
The Oscar-nominated actor believes it was La La Land that encouraged him to take a step back and reflect on his career decisions. The success of the movie he made with Emma Stone remains unrivaled, and with it came the realization that will forever guide Gosling in choosing projects he will partake in.
Ryan Gosling Is No Longer Taking Dark Movie Roles
During his interview with the Wall Street Journal, actor Ryan Gosling revealed Damien Chazelle’s La La Land was a huge factor in his shift of career choices. He thought about what kind of projects would be best for his family and what his children could also enjoy.
“I think ‘La La Land’ was the first. It was just sort of like, ‘Oh, this will be fun for them, too, because even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day or we’re dancing or we’re singing.’ ”
He made the conscious choice of leaving dark roles in the past, especially the ones that would require him to put himself in a critical position that would affect his family mentally or emotionally.
“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place. This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva, and we make them with our family in mind first.”
This means fans won’t see Gosling take any grim roles anytime soon, but the great news is that he will be delving into more lighthearted and fun projects, sometimes even silly ones.
The audience had already witnessed this when the actor joined Barbie. There’s no denying that Gosling had to wear super funky outfits and even had to perform a song number.
Ryan Gosling Regrets One Thing About La La Land
Speaking of La La Land, Gosling shared in the same interview with WSJ that there was one scene in his critically acclaimed film that he regrets. Even years after, the awkward hand position that can be seen on the official poster still haunts the actor.
“There’s a moment that haunts me where we’re dancing, Emma and I. I didn’t know this would become the poster for the movie. We were supposed to have our hands up, and I thought it’d be cool to put my hand like that. Even though everyone told me it wasn’t cool, I was sure that [a flat hand] was cooler than [pointing up].”
Now that Gosling has reflected on it, he thinks the hand position seems very wrong, though there’s nothing he can do about it anymore than laugh it off.
La La Land is available to stream on Netflix.
