It’s been more than 40 years since the first episode of the series premiered and it has managed to hook the viewers to this date. To say the least, 4 decades of this anime showed the ever-evolving characters, new mentors, villains and so much more. But what’s fascinating is how underplayed some characters truly were in the anime. Such was the case with Whis, the Guide Angel Attendant and martial arts teacher to Beerus, God of Destruction.
Whis is a knowledgeable and powerful character in the series who also manages to sustain the mystery around him. Although he mentored both Goku and Vegeta, some fans have speculated that Whis was more deserving of the Supreme Kai position than Shin.

His involvement and never-ending zeal for knowledge make him the better candidate for the role of the Supreme Kai. Besides, there’s a strong contrast between Whis and Shin in terms of their involvement and knowledge. While Whis is more involved with the events, Shin seems too detached and ignorant at times which is further pointed out by Beerus.

While his role as Beerus’s Martial arts teacher may seem underwhelming, Whis had a major role and impact in influencing Goku’s growth as a character. We do not know the extent of his strength but he has surely established himself as a strong character.
All in all, he possesses balance and equilibrium when it comes to strength, power, and knowledge. To add to that, he also reflects patience and noble virtues that set him apart along with his willingness to learn more about cultures and cuisine of the human realm. I mean, he also did establish himself as a glutton but no one’s complaining.
While he deserved the role of Supreme Kai, the author perpetrated excellence with Whis’s character as a mentor who reflects knowledge and strength in his character and strong virtues along with a sense of justice. To say the least, his role as a mentor validated and triggered Goku’s growth and development.
