But with the latest update, things are taking a noticeably darker turn. If you’ve been following the community theories, this update might confirm some of the most harrowing speculations about the Automatons.

The Escalation of Freedom update has been a blast so far, bringing us a bunch of new things to explore and do. There’s one line in the patch notes that has set off the community.

Though, hinting at something sinister going on behind the scenes with the Bots. The patch notes mention two new objectives:

These faction-specific optional objectives will have you assaulting Automaton human processing plants to destroy their evil Bio-Processor, and venturing deep into Terminid territory to extract with a living larva sample that the bugs will do anything to get back!

The phrase “Human processing plants” has set off a red alarm in everyone’s minds. What exactly are the bots doing? A month ago, we featured a Helldivers 2 theory from Reddit that suggested the Bots were using Super Earth citizens as fuel, which is why the Bots dropped red oil.

Some people tried to dismiss this saying the Hydraulic liquid fueling them is red, but it still feels like something is happening along these lines.

Another Reddit user theorized that the Bots are people who are being controlled against their will to fight their fellow Super Earth citizens. The Bots are considered to be descendants of Cyborgs (from the first Helldivers), so it’ll be interesting to see how all of this ties in together.

These Theories Have Been Going on for Ages

The theories about the true nature of the Bots have been circling the community for months on end. Many people believe they have some sort of connection to humans, but the nature of that connection is what varies between theories.

One Helldivers 2 player reported hearing human screams from the Bots, of them asking you for help as you approach them.

If this person isn’t fibbing for the sake of it, the theory about Bots being repurposed humans might be true.

This Redditor believes that Automatons are just humans who are a little too enthusiastic about body modification. Not sure there’s anything to support it, but worth mentioning.

A while ago, the official Helldivers 2 account sent out an encrypted message. When decrypted, people found that it was a message from the Cyborgs, calling the Bots their children.

They supposedly just wanted independence from the oppression of Super Earth. Do you know how this could connect to theories about the Bots repurposing Super Earth citizens for their purposes?

We’d love to hear about your theories in the comments below!
